LCA Childcare/Community Care is a vocational specialism that develops knowledge, practical care skills and positive attitudes toward babies and young children, families, people with special needs and older people in the community. The NCCA module descriptor provides five modules; schools/students complete any four in any order. Learning covers feeding and sterilising, nutrition and weaning, health and hygiene, safety and first-aid, clothing and equipment, the five areas of child development, play and toys, equal opportunities, parenting and babysitting responsibilities, community childcare services, inclusiveness and communication with people with special needs, and the well-being, supports and care options of older people. Assessment combines Key Assignments and attendance with a final SEC practical-and-written examination (12 credits). The programme is student-centred and activity-based and prepares students for parenthood, further study or work in childcare and community care.
