About the HSK 5 Exam
The HSK Level 5 (汉语水平考试五级) is the fifth level of the classic six-level Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, China's official standardized test of Chinese proficiency for non-native speakers, administered by Chinese Testing International under the Ministry of Education. It targets learners who have studied Chinese for more than two years at 2–3 classes per week and have mastered approximately 2,500 common Chinese words, placing them at the CEFR C1 level. The exam consists of three sections: Listening (45 MCQs, ~30 minutes), Reading (45 MCQs, 45 minutes) and Writing (10 tasks, 40 minutes — sentence ordering and short essay composition). Listening audio is played once only, making real-time comprehension at near-natural speed essential. Reading covers vocabulary-in-context cloze passages, sentence consistency judgments and longer article comprehension on topics including technology, culture, business and society. Candidates who pass HSK 5 can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese films and plays, and give relatively complete speeches in Chinese; the certificate is widely accepted for university admissions, employment and Chinese government scholarships. As of 2026 the classic HSK 1–6 format is still being administered monthly at test centers worldwide; the new HSK 3.0 framework begins full implementation in July 2026 but the current Level 5 certificate remains valid for two years from the test date.
