HiSET Math: Suggested Study Strategy

1Focus first on Algebraic Concepts — at ~45% of the exam, mastering linear equations, inequalities, and graphing will have the biggest impact on your score.
2Use the provided formula sheet: you do not need to memorize area, volume, or Pythagorean theorem formulas, so spend your study time understanding when and how to apply them.
3Practice interpreting graphs and tables — data analysis questions are common and test your ability to read bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, and scatter plots quickly.
4Work through word problems step by step: translate words into math expressions, identify what is being asked, and check your answer against the original problem.
5Eliminate clearly wrong answers on test day. If you are unsure, rule out answers that are too large, too small, or the wrong unit, then guess from the remaining options.

How many questions are on the HiSET Mathematics subtest?

The HiSET Mathematics subtest has 55 multiple-choice questions and a 90-minute time limit, an average of about 98 seconds per question. PSI notes that a test may contain some questions that do not count toward your score.

Is a calculator allowed on the HiSET Math test?

The Mathematics subtest is calculator neutral: a calculator is not required, and every question can be solved by hand. If you request one, the test center must provide access to an approved calculator, but you may not bring your own. A one-page formula sheet is also provided — however, it contains only rectangle perimeter, circle circumference, four area formulas, three volume formulas, and unit-conversion tables. PSI states explicitly that the Pythagorean theorem, the quadratic formula, and distance = (rate)(time) are NOT provided, and the sheet has no surface-area formula at all, so those must be memorized.

What is the passing score for the HiSET Mathematics subtest?

You need a score of at least 8 out of 20 on the Mathematics subtest. Additionally, to earn the HiSET credential, you must achieve a minimum composite score of 45 points across all five subtests (Language Arts Reading, Language Arts Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies).

What math topics are covered on the HiSET?

How is the HiSET Math test scored?

Raw scores are converted to a scaled score ranging from 1 to 20. A score of 8 is the minimum passing score for the subtest, and 15 marks College and Career Readiness. PSI uses a statistical equating process so that scores from different test forms are comparable, and it does not publish a raw-to-scaled conversion table.

How does the HiSET compare to the GED Math test?

Both cover similar high school math content. The HiSET Mathematics subtest is 55 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes; the GED Mathematical Reasoning test is about 46 questions in 115 minutes and includes drag-and-drop, hot-spot, and fill-in-the-blank items alongside multiple choice. The HiSET is currently offered in 30 states and territories, while the GED is available far more widely.
