C.Classe de Sixième (6e), Classe de Cinquième (5e), and Classe de Quatrième (4e) in collège
D.Classe de Troisième (3e) in collège and Classe de Seconde (2de) in lycée général
Explanation: Cycle 3, designated as the 'cycle de consolidation', spans across the primary-secondary divide. It comprises CM1 and CM2 in école élémentaire and the 6e grade in collège, specifically designed to bridge elementary schooling and secondary education.
2What is the official designation and grade composition of Cycle 4 in the French secondary education system?
A.Cycle des apprentissages fondamentaux, comprising CP, CE1, and CE2
B.Cycle des approfondissements, comprising the 5e, 4e, and 3e grades of collège
C.Cycle de consolidation, comprising CM1, CM2, and 6e
D.Cycle de détermination, comprising the 2de, 1re, and Terminale grades of lycée
Explanation: Cycle 4 is officially titled the 'cycle des approfondissements' (cycle of deepening). It covers the three final years of middle school: classe de cinquième (5e), classe de quatrième (4e), and classe de troisième (3e), leading to the validation of the Socle commun and the Diplôme National du Brevet.
3What are the four distinct sub-components comprising Domain 1 ('Les langages pour penser et communiquer') of the Socle commun de connaissances, de compétences et de culture (S4C)?
A.Classical Latin, contemporary European languages, laboratory mathematics, and athletic choreography
B.Written expression, oral argumentation, digital programming, and philosophical debate
C.French language; foreign and regional languages; mathematical, scientific, and computer languages; languages of arts and the body
D.Verbal communication, non-verbal posture, visual arts, and algorithmic computation
Explanation: Domain 1 of the Socle commun (S4C) is divided into four official sub-domains: (1) Comprendre, s'exprimer en utilisant la langue française à l'oral et à l'écrit; (2) Comprendre, s'exprimer en utilisant une langue étrangère et, le cas échéant, une langue régionale; (3) Comprendre, s'exprimer en utilisant les langages mathématiques, scientifiques et informatiques; and (4) Comprendre, s'exprimer en utilisant les langages des arts et du corps.
4Which competencies and instructional objectives are specifically targeted by Domain 2 ('Les méthodes et outils pour apprendre') of the Socle commun (S4C)?
A.Acquiring physical conditioning, cardiovascular health, and competitive sports ethics
B.Grammatical dissection of complex classical sentences and literary rhetorical tropes
C.Chronological memorization of political dynasties and historical treaty dates
D.Autonomous organization of personal work, digital information retrieval, media literacy, and collective project cooperation
Explanation: Domain 2 ('Les méthodes et outils pour apprendre') focuses on transversal learning-to-learn skills. It targets pupils' ability to plan and organize personal work, access documentation, utilize digital technologies and media responsibly (ÉMI - Éducation aux Médias et à l'Information), conduct cooperative team projects, and evaluate their own learning strategies.
5What is the primary educational focus of Domain 3 ('La formation de la personne et du citoyen') in the French Socle commun?
A.Developing moral and civic sensibilities, critical judgment, respect for others, and adherence to Republican and secular values
B.Preparing pupils exclusively for competitive entrance into national engineering and administrative grand écoles
C.Fostering speculative entrepreneurial initiatives and financial market investment literacy
D.Teaching professional office administration and corporate management techniques
Explanation: Domain 3 ('La formation de la personne et du citoyen') aims to educate responsible, enlightened citizens. It emphasizes moral sensitivity, legal literacy (understanding school and social rules), exercising critical judgment against prejudice, embracing laïcité, and committing to solidarity and equality.
6How does Domain 4 ('Les systèmes naturels et les systèmes techniques') define the relationship between scientific curiosity and technological problem-solving?
A.By requiring pupils to memorize scientific formulas without performing experimental investigations
B.By developing empirical observation, scientific inquiry, hypothesis testing, and the design of technical solutions addressing human needs
C.By isolating natural biology from physics and prohibiting any study of industrial technologies in middle school
D.By replacing all laboratory science teaching with historical biographies of famous European inventors
Explanation: Domain 4 ('Les systèmes naturels et les systèmes techniques') fosters scientific thinking and technological capability. Pupils observe natural phenomena, formulate hypotheses, design and carry out experiments, interpret data, and analyze technical systems to understand how human technological innovations address challenges while considering environmental impact.
7What is the core pedagogical objective of Domain 5 ('Les représentations du monde et l'activité humaine') in the Socle commun?
A.Standardizing global cultural narratives by eliminating the study of local and regional French heritage
B.Training pupils to produce commercial marketing campaigns for international tourism agencies
C.Enabling pupils to situate human societies across historical time and geographic space, and understand artistic creations and cultural diversity
D.Focusing solely on contemporary geopolitical conflicts occurring after the year 2000
Explanation: Domain 5 ('Les représentations du monde et l'activité humaine') provides spatial, temporal, and cultural frameworks. Through history, geography, literature, and the arts, it helps pupils understand how humans have represented their world, created civilizations, organized societies, produced works of art, and interpreted human existence.
8How is the final mark of the Diplôme National du Brevet calculated from the 2026 session onwards, following décret n° 2025-328 and the arrêté du 10 avril 2025?
A.As a total out of 800 points, combining 400 points of Socle commun mastery with 400 points of terminal examinations
B.As an average out of 20, combining 40% continuous assessment with 60% from the final examinations
C.As an average out of 20 based exclusively on the four written examinations, the oral test being purely advisory
D.As a total out of 1,000 points in which the 3e class council may award up to 200 discretionary bonus points
Explanation: From session 2026 the DNB is no longer marked out of 800 points. The reform sets a final average out of 20, awarded to candidates reaching 10/20, in which continuous assessment counts for 40% and the five final tests for 60%. The change was designed to give more weight to the terminal examinations and to make the brevet legible on the same 20-point scale as the baccalauréat.
9What is the basis of the 40% continuous-assessment component of the reformed Diplôme National du Brevet, and how does it differ from the arrangement it replaced?
A.The average of the annual marks obtained in every compulsory 3e subject, each subject carrying the same weight, instead of positioning on the eight components of the Socle commun
B.The average of the marks obtained across 5e, 4e and 3e in French and mathematics only, all other subjects being excluded
C.The head of school's global appreciation of the pupil's attitude, converted into a mark out of 20 by the class council
D.The pupil's positioning on the eight components of the Socle commun, unchanged since 2016 but now expressed out of 20
Explanation: The 2025 reform replaced the socle-mastery scale with ordinary subject marks: the continuous-assessment component is the average of the annual marks obtained in the compulsory subjects of the classe de 3e, every subject carrying the same coefficient. Points above 10/20 obtained in an optional subject may be added. Candidats individuels, who have no schooling record, sit additional tests instead.
10Which set of coefficients applies to the five final tests of the Diplôme National du Brevet at the 2026 session?
A.Français 2, Mathématiques 2, Histoire-géographie 1.5, EMC 0.5, Sciences 2, Épreuve orale 2
B.Français 4, Mathématiques 4, Histoire-géographie-EMC 1, Sciences 1, Épreuve orale 1
C.All five tests carry an identical coefficient of 1, the oral counting only for candidates without continuous assessment
D.Français 3, Mathématiques 3, Histoire-géographie-EMC 3, Sciences 3, the oral being marked pass or fail
Explanation: The final battery comprises four written tests and one oral. Français (3 hours) and mathématiques (2 hours) each carry coefficient 2, sciences (1 hour, on two of physique-chimie, SVT and technologie) carries coefficient 2, and the oral project defence carries coefficient 2. The two-hour history paper is now marked separately: histoire-géographie at coefficient 1.5 and enseignement moral et civique at coefficient 0.5.

About the CAPES Exam

The Certificat d'Aptitude au Professorat de l'Enseignement du Second Degré (CAPES) is France's premier competitive recruitment concours for secondary education teachers (professeurs certifiés, Catégorie A civil servants). Administered by the Ministère de l'Éducation Nationale, the examination selects teachers across collèges (middle schools, Cycles 3 and 4) and lycées d'enseignement général et technologique (high schools). Beginning in session 2026 under the landmark bac+3 teacher recruitment reform (décret n° 2025-352 and arrêté du 17 avril 2025), candidates can sit the competitive examination at the end of their third undergraduate year (Licence), undertaking a compensated master's work-study professional program upon admission. While the written papers and the first oral lesson test are strictly disciplinary and section-specific (e.g., Lettres, Mathématiques, Histoire-Géographie, Sciences Physiques, Langues Vivantes, SVT, Philosophie, etc.), all candidates are evaluated against an identical institutional and legal framework. This common body of knowledge includes the secondary curriculum architecture (Cycles 3-4, Socle commun S4C, DNB, Lycée général reform, Grand Oral), general didactics and competency-based assessment, inclusive education mechanisms (PAI, PAP, PPS, PPRE, ULIS, AESH), school governance (CA, Conseil de classe, Conseil pédagogique), and the essential obligations of the public service (laïcité, neutrality, réserve, minor protection under Article 40 CPP, pHARe anti-bullying, and ecological transition).

6Prepare thoroughly for the common oral entretien: master the Law of 15 March 2004 on laïcité, civil service duties (neutralité, réserve, obéissance), child protection reporting under Article 40 CPP, and the pHARe anti-bullying protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CAPES examination in France and what qualification does it confer?

The Certificat d'Aptitude au Professorat de l'Enseignement du Second Degré (CAPES) is France's premier national competitive civil service recruitment examination (concours de Catégorie A) organized by the Ministère de l'Éducation Nationale. Passing the CAPES confers appointment as a certified secondary teacher (professeur certifié), qualifying laureates to teach their academic discipline in public collèges (middle schools) and lycées d'enseignement général et technologique (high schools) across France.

How did the 2026 teacher recruitment reform change the CAPES eligibility and structure?

Pursuant to décret n° 2025-352 and the arrêté du 17 avril 2025, the external CAPES concours was reformed starting in session 2026 to recruit candidates at the bac+3 level (enrolled in or holding a Licence degree) rather than bac+5. Laureates enter a two-year master's program as paid civil-servant trainees (fonctionnaires stagiaires). To ensure equity during the transition, a bac+5 external concours is maintained transitionally for sessions 2026 and 2027 under the modified arrêté du 25 janvier 2021 before being permanently phased out.

How does the CAPES balance section-specific disciplinary tests with common professional requirements?

The CAPES is divided into independent disciplinary sections (e.g., Modern Literature, Mathematics, History-Geography, Physics-Chemistry, English, Life and Earth Sciences, Philosophy). The two written admissibility papers and the first oral lesson test are strictly disciplinary and section-specific. However, all sections share an identical institutional architecture, notation scale, and a textually identical second oral admission test: a 35-minute interview (coefficient 3) assessing the candidate's grasp of Republican values, laïcité, public service ethics, pupil development, and the ecological transition. This common pedagogical and institutional foundation forms the basis of OpenExamPrep's practice bank.

What are the scoring rules and eliminatory marks in the CAPES concours?

Article 5 of the arrêté du 17 avril 2025 provides that the tests are marked from 0 to 20 and that, for the admissibility phase, 'une note globale égale ou inférieure à 5 est éliminatoire' — an overall admissibility mark of 5/20 or below disqualifies the candidate from proceeding to the orals. In the oral admission phase, a mark of 0 on either of the two tests is eliminatory. Final admission is determined strictly by merit ranking within the published quota of posts (7,830 external posts opened in 2026 — 3,697 at bac+3 and 4,133 at bac+5 — fixed by two arrêtés of 19 February 2026).

What is the format and scope of the common second oral admission test (épreuve d'entretien)?

The second oral admission test is a 35-minute interview (coefficient 3) without preparation. It comprises: (1) a 5-minute presentation by the candidate detailing their educational background, trajectory, and professional motivations; (2) a 10-minute exchange with the jury exploring the presentation; and (3) a 20-minute exchange based on practical professional scenarios exploring two mandatory domains: the values of the Republic including laïcité, and projection into the profession covering civil service obligations (neutrality, non-discrimination, gender equality, pupil protection, and the ecological transition).

How are secondary school curricula organized between Collège and Lycée Général?

Secondary education in France is structured across distinct educational cycles: Collège encompasses the final year of Cycle 3 (6e, cycle de consolidation, linking with primary CM1-CM2) and the whole of Cycle 4 (5e, 4e, 3e, cycle des approfondissements), culminating in the Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB). From session 2026 the DNB is awarded on a final average out of 20, combining 40% contrôle continu drawn from the annual marks in every compulsory 3e subject with 60% from four written tests and an oral project defence. Lycée Général comprises 2de générale et technologique (common exploration), 1re générale, and Terminale générale. Under the reformed Baccalauréat, students follow a common core curriculum and choose three specialty subjects (spécialités) in 1re, keeping two in Terminale, assessed through continuous control, terminal written exams, and the Grand Oral.
