About the Licencia Profesional Clase A (Chile) Exam
The Licencia de Conducir Profesional Clase A authorises paid passenger and freight transport in Chile and is issued in five sub-classes under Article 12 of the Ley de Tránsito: A1 for taxis; A2 for taxis, ambulances and passenger vehicles of ten to seventeen seats excluding the driver, extending to thirty-two seats after two years' holding provided the vehicle is under nine metres; A3 for passenger transport with no seat limit; A4 for rigid freight vehicles over 3,500 kg gross; and A5 for rigid or articulated freight vehicles over 3,500 kg gross. Article 13 requires an applicant to be at least 20, to have held a Class B licence for two years, to have completed basic education, and to pass the theory and practical courses of a state-recognised Escuela de Conductores Profesionales; A3 and A5 additionally require two years in a listed lower class or a special course using a total immersion simulator. The municipal theory examination is compulsory and is sat once. How many questions are on the Chile Clase A professional theory exam?
CONASET and the MTT do not publish an item count or a pass mark for the professional paper, although they publish both for Clase B and Clase C. Figures circulating on commercial practice sites conflict with each other and are not sourced to the authorities, so the safe answer is to confirm the format with the municipality where you will sit it.
Is the '17 out of 20' pass mark correct for Clase A?
Not for the current professional licence. That standard belongs to the pre-1997 Clase A1 licence, whose 20-question paper and 17-correct pass mark are set out in CONASET's cuestionario base for Classes A1*, A2*, D and E. Those old classes are a separate, legacy examination.
What are the entry requirements for a professional Clase A licence?
Article 13 of the Ley de Tránsito requires the applicant to be at least 20 years old, to have held a Class B licence for at least two years, to have completed basic education, and to pass the theory and practical courses of a state-recognised Escuela de Conductores Profesionales. For A3 the applicant must additionally have held A1 or A2 for two years, and for A5 must have held A4 for two years; failing that, a special course using a total immersion simulator (SIT) is required.
How many attempts do I get?
Two per examination. If you fail the first attempt you must retake it within 25 working days. If that period elapses without your sitting the retake, or you fail it, the process ends and the licence is refused; you may begin a fresh process after 30 working days, and after a second refusal you must wait six months.
Is a practical driving test also required?
CONASET states that for Classes A1 to A5 the municipality's Director de Tránsito decides whether to administer a practical driving test to the applicant. This differs from Classes B and C, where the practical test is always compulsory.
How often must a professional licence be re-accredited?
Article 19 provides that the licence is of indefinite duration but that a professional licence holder must accredit every 4 years that they still meet the requirements of Article 13 numbers 1 and 4 — moral fitness and the professional training requirement. Non-professional and special licences run on a 6-year cycle instead.
