For the B-1, B-2, KB-1, and KB-2 commercial general building classifications, the NASCLA Commercial General Building exam may be taken in place of the PSI trade exam.

Arizona requires a minimum of four years of practical or management trade experience in the classification applied for, with at least two of those years within the last ten. The PSI Trade Exam is also open book, but only three references are allowed in the exam center for the commercial exam: 29 CFR Part 1926, the 2018 IRC, and the 2018 IBC. References may be highlighted, underlined, and indexed and may be tabbed only with permanent tabs; loose papers, handwritten notes, and Post-It tabs are prohibited.

The trade exam may be waived under A.A.C. R4-9-106(E) if the qualifying party is or was a qualifying party for a licensee in Arizona or another state in the same or a comparable classification within the preceding five years. The SRE can never be waived, because it covers Arizona-specific statutes and rules. Waiver requests are submitted with the license application and are not pre-approved.

PSI requires a 30-day wait before retaking a failed exam and allows three attempts, after which a 90-day wait applies between further retakes. The examination fee is charged for each attempt and is valid for one year. The SRE follows GMetrix's terms instead: the course is licensed to one named user for one year and includes a single exam attempt, so a failed SRE means repurchasing the $61 course.
