About the RI Bar Exam

The Rhode Island Bar Examination is the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE), which Rhode Island adopted beginning with the February 2019 administration. It is given over two days: Day 1 is the Multistate Essay Examination (six essays) and the Multistate Performance Test (two tasks); Day 2 is the 200-question Multistate Bar Examination (MBE). The MBE is weighted 50%, the MEE 30%, and the MPT 20%, for a combined scaled score out of 400. Rhode Island requires a 270 to pass and accepts transferred UBE scores of 270 or higher. The Board's rules require MEE answers to be based on general legal principles, and Rhode Island has no separate state-law component.

How do the Rhode Island Bar vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 Rhode Island Bar terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the Rhode Island Bar terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the Rhode Island Board of Bar Examiners, Rhode Island Supreme Court content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

What is the passing score for the Rhode Island Bar Exam?

Rhode Island administers the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) and requires a combined scaled score of 270 out of 400 to pass. The same 270 threshold applies to applicants seeking admission by transferring a UBE score earned in another jurisdiction, provided the score is recent (generally within two years).

Is the Rhode Island Bar Exam a UBE exam?

Yes. Rhode Island adopted the Uniform Bar Examination beginning with the February 2019 administration. The UBE consists of the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE, 50%), the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE, 30%), and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT, 20%). Rhode Island no longer writes its own state-specific essays; it uses the nationally developed UBE components, and a passing score is portable to other UBE jurisdictions.
