About the IL Bar Exam

The Illinois Bar Examination is the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE), which Illinois adopted beginning July 2019. The two-day exam consists of the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE, 200 multiple-choice questions, 50%), the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE, six 30-minute essays, 30%), and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT, two 90-minute tasks, 20%). The components are scaled and combined to a 400-point score; 266 is required to pass. Because Illinois uses the UBE, qualifying scores are portable to and from other UBE jurisdictions. Illinois has announced it will transition to the NextGen Bar Exam beginning February 2028.

How do the Illinois Bar vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 Illinois Bar terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the Illinois Bar terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

Illinois requires a Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) scaled score of 266 out of 400 to pass. The MBE counts for 50%, the MEE for 30%, and the MPT for 20%.
