About the CPNRE / REx-PN Exam
The CPNRE and REx-PN are the entry-to-practice registration exams for licensed/registered practical nurses (LPN/RPN) in Canada. Most provinces and territories use the CPNRE (160-170 questions, 4 hours), while Ontario and British Columbia use the NCSBN-developed REx-PN, an adaptive exam of 90-150 items. Both are pass/fail and assess safe, competent entry-level practical nursing.
Exam sponsor: CPNRE administered for provincial LPN/RPN colleges (ASI/Yardstick); REx-PN administered by NCSBN for ON (CNO) and BC (BCCNM). The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

CPNRE: 160-170 multiple-choice questions, 40-60% case-based, single-best-answer. REx-PN: adaptive multiple-choice plus select-all-that-apply (SATA) and dosage-calculation items, organized by NCSBN Client Needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the CPNRE / REx-PN vocabulary game free?
Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.
How do the CPNRE / REx-PN vocabulary games work?
There are 4 games built on 44 CPNRE / REx-PN terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.
Where do the CPNRE / REx-PN terms come from?
OpenExamPrep researched each term from the CPNRE administered for provincial LPN/RPN colleges (ASI/Yardstick); REx-PN administered by NCSBN for ON (CNO) and BC (BCCNM) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
What is the difference between the CPNRE and the REx-PN?
Both are entry-to-practice exams for Canadian licensed/registered practical nurses. The CPNRE (developed with Yardstick) is used by most provinces and territories and is a fixed-form 160-170 question exam. The REx-PN (developed by NCSBN) is used only in Ontario and British Columbia and is a computerized adaptive test of 90-150 items.
How many questions are on the REx-PN and CPNRE?
The REx-PN delivers between 90 and 150 items (60-120 scored plus about 30 unscored pretest items), adapting in real time. The CPNRE has 160-170 questions, some of which are experimental and do not count toward the score.
