Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SPHRi exam pass rate?

HRCI reports a 76% pass rate for the SPHRi exam as of December 31, 2025, in its officially published exam statistics. This is HRCI's overall reported pass rate and is not broken out by first-time versus repeat candidates. To pass, candidates need a scaled score of 500 out of 700.

What are the SPHRi functional areas and their weights?

The SPHRi exam content outline, which took effect in 2024 and remains current for 2026, defines five functional areas: Leadership and Strategy (33%), Talent Management (23%), Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition (17%), Total Rewards (17%), and HR Information Management, Safety, and Security (10%). These weights set how many of the 115 scored questions come from each area.

How is the SPHRi different from the SPHR?

The SPHR is built for senior HR leaders based in the United States and includes US employment law content. HRCI designs the SPHRi for HR leaders based outside the United States; it requires documented knowledge of local employment law instead of US federal law. (HRCI's GPHR is a separate credential designed for HR leaders with multinational responsibilities spanning multiple countries.) The SPHR and SPHRi share the same five functional area names and weights under HRCI's 2024 content outline.

What is the SPHRi retake policy if I fail?

Candidates who do not pass must wait 90 calendar days before the earliest possible retake date, per HRCI's Certification Policies and Procedures Handbook. HRCI also caps candidates at three attempts of the same exam within any rolling 365-day period. Each retake requires a new application and full exam fee unless optional Second Chance Insurance was purchased at initial registration.

Do I need employer sponsorship to take the SPHRi?

No. The SPHRi does not require employer sponsorship. Candidates apply directly to HRCI and must meet one of three eligibility paths: a master's degree plus 4 years of professional-level HR experience, a bachelor's degree plus 5 years, or 7 years of experience without a degree. Application approval from HRCI is required before scheduling the exam.

How long is the SPHRi certification valid, and how do I renew it?

The SPHRi is valid for 3 years from the pass date. Renewal requires earning 60 recertification credits during that period: 45 in HR-related content and 15 in Business Management and Leadership. Candidates who do not earn enough credits can retake the exam instead of recertifying through credits.
