No. Nig. CARs 2.2.4.3 says Nigeria does not validate or convert Air Traffic Controller, Cabin Crew or ATSEP licences. They must complete an initial course with a Nigerian AOC holder or ATO and sit NCAA tests. Flight crew licences can be validated under 2.2.4.1.
Cabin crew licence lapsed more than 2 but not more than 10 years. What is required?
Nig. CARs 2.5.1.3(j)(ii): refresher training acceptable to the Authority, a pass in the Cabin Crew Licence General paper, and a skill test per the CAA Skill Test Standards. Under 6 months lapsed needs only renewal evidence; over 10 years means meeting all initial issue requirements.
What training shelf-life applies to a first application for a Nigerian cabin crew licence?
Nig. CARs 2.5.1.3(a)(4): the initial training course from an AOC holder or ATO must have been completed within the 12 months preceding the application date. A course finished 14 months earlier has expired. The applicant must also be at least 18 and English-proficient.
Above what cabin altitude must the PIC require all passengers to use oxygen continuously?
4 000 m (13 000 ft) cabin pressure altitude, under Nig. CARs 8.9.1.6. Do not confuse this with the 3 050 m (10 000 ft) MSL figure in 8.9.2.17, which only triggers the pre-take-off briefing on normal and emergency oxygen use.
How many passenger oxygen dispensing units must an aircraft carry relative to its seats?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.13(e) and (g): the total number of dispensing units and outlets must exceed the number of seats by at least 10%, with the extra units evenly distributed. The surplus covers occupants in aisles, galleys and lavatories when pressurisation fails.
Which aircraft must have automatically deployable oxygen equipment for every occupant?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.13(g): those operated above 25 000 ft, or which cannot descend safely to 13 000 ft within four minutes, whose individual certificate of airworthiness was first issued on or after 9 November 1998. The same 10% surplus of units applies.
Above 25 000 ft, what oxygen provision does Nig. CARs make specifically for cabin crew?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.13(d)(2): sufficient spare outlets and masks, or portable oxygen units, distributed evenly through the cabin so oxygen is immediately available to each required cabin crew member wherever they are standing when pressurisation fails. Flight crew masks must be quick-donning.
What must loss-of-pressurisation safeguards achieve for cabin crew, beyond survival?
Nig. CARs 8.9.1.6(d)(1): cabin crew must have a reasonable probability of retaining consciousness during the emergency descent, and additionally have protection that lets them administer first aid to passengers in stabilised flight afterwards. Passengers only need protection against the effects of hypoxia.
First-aid oxygen on a pressurised aeroplane above 25 000 ft: what quantity and flow?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.15: undiluted first-aid oxygen for at least 2% of passengers carried but never fewer than one person, with no fewer than two dispensing units usable by cabin crew. Equipment must deliver at least 4 litres per minute STPD to each user.
A passenger carries their own medical oxygen. What two hard rules apply in the cabin?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.13: nobody may smoke, and no crew member may allow smoking, within 3 m (10 ft) of the storage and dispensing equipment. No crew member may allow anyone to connect or disconnect the equipment from a cylinder while other passengers are aboard.
Which passenger information signs must a 5 700 kg or heavier passenger aeroplane carry?
Nig. CARs 7.10.1.4: at least one sign notifying when smoking is prohibited and one notifying when safety belts must be fastened, in letters or symbols, legible from every cabin seat under all probable lighting. Both must be switchable on and off by the crew.
Under what conditions may cargo be carried in the passenger compartment?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.15: only in an approved cargo bin that withstands the passenger-seat load factors and emergency landing conditions multiplied by 1.15, using the combined mass of bin and maximum cargo. The approved maximum mass and any distribution instructions must be conspicuously marked on the bin.
What must be secured in the cabin before an aircraft moves, takes off or lands?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.22: every item of mass in the passenger cabin, so it cannot become a hazard during taxi, take-off, landing or turbulence, and each passenger serving cart in its stowed position. Nig. CARs 8.9.2.21 separately bars food, beverages and tableware at any passenger seat.
Why does the cabin crew knowledge syllabus include weight and balance?
Nig. CARs 2.5.1.3(c)(2) lists weight and balance as examinable theory of flight and aircraft operations content. Seat allocation on lightly loaded flights and where heavy baggage is stowed shift the centre of gravity, so cabin crew must apply the seating and stowage instructions that keep the aircraft within its loadsheet limits.
What four markings or conditions must every item of emergency and flotation equipment meet?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.1(a): readily accessible without appreciable preparation time, clearly identified and marked with its method of operation, marked with the date of last inspection, and marked as to contents when carried in a compartment or container. An item missing the inspection-date marking does not meet 7.9.1.1(a)(3).
What three things must an aeroplane's emergency lighting system do?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.2(a)(3): operating independently of the main lighting system, it must illuminate each passenger exit marking and locating sign, provide enough general cabin lighting, and, for AOC operations, include floor proximity emergency escape path marking, which guides passengers along the floor when smoke hides overhead lights.
How many hand fire extinguishers must an aeroplane seating 150 passengers carry?
Three. Nig. CARs 7.9.1.6(b)(5) sets the table: 7-29 seats need 1, 30-60 need 2, 61-200 need 3, 201-300 need 4, rising to 8 at 601 or more. They must be conveniently located and uniformly distributed through the compartment.
How does a lavatory waste-receptacle extinguisher differ from a hand extinguisher?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.7: it is built in, one per disposal receptacle, and discharges automatically into that receptacle when a fire occurs there. No crew action triggers it, and it protects only the receptacle, so a fire elsewhere in the lavatory still needs a hand extinguisher.
How long must cabin crew protective breathing equipment supply breathing gas, and where is it stowed?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.14: not less than 15 minutes. Portable PBE must be installed adjacent to each required cabin crew duty station and additionally at or adjacent to each required hand fire extinguisher. Where that extinguisher sits inside a cargo compartment, the PBE is stowed outside the entrance.
An aeroplane is certificated at 5 000 kg take-off mass. Must it carry a crash axe?
No. Nig. CARs 7.9.1.9 applies only to aeroplanes certificated with a take-off mass of 5 700 kg or more. Where it applies, the axe must be appropriate for effective use in that aeroplane type and stored in a place not visible to passengers, which is part of the requirement, not a stowage convention.
How many megaphones does an aeroplane seating 180 passengers need, and where?
Two. Nig. CARs 7.9.1.16(b)(2): more than 99 seats requires one at the forward end and one at the most rearward location readily accessible from a normal cabin crew seat. Aeroplanes seating 61-99 need only one, at that rearmost position.
Which two emergency drills must a cabin crew member perform once, during initial training only?
IS 8.10.1.13(b): the protective breathing equipment and firefighting drill, and the emergency evacuation drill. Every other listed drill, including the emergency exit and hand extinguisher drills, must be performed at both initial and recurrent training under IS 8.10.1.13(c).
In the initial evacuation drill, what may a crew member do instead of using a slide?
IS 8.10.1.13(b)(2) normally requires actually exiting the aircraft or training device by an installed evacuation slide. The Note permits the alternative of observing the exits being opened in the emergency mode and the associated slide or slide-raft pack being deployed and inflated.
Name the exit-handling steps required in the recurring emergency exit drill.
IS 8.10.1.13(c)(1): pre-flight each exit type and its slide or slide raft, disarm and open each door in normal mode, close it, arm it in emergency mode, open it in emergency mode, use the manual inflation system, open each window exit, and remove and position the escape rope.
Must a cabin crew member fight a real fire during the hand fire extinguisher drill?
No. IS 8.10.1.13(c)(2) Note 1 says fighting an actual or simulated fire is not necessary in that drill, though the crew member must actually operate and discharge each installed type. Note 2 says discharging Halon is not appropriate unless a facility designed to prevent environmental harm is used.
What decompression-related tasks belong to the emergency oxygen system drill?
IS 8.10.1.13(c)(3): manually open each type of oxygen mask compartment and deploy the masks, identify compartments holding extra masks, implement immediate action decompression procedures, administer oxygen to self, passengers and those with special needs, and reset the system where applicable.
What cabin preparation does the ditching drill require before impact?
IS 8.10.1.13(c)(5): brief with the PIC to obtain ditching information, brief the other cabin crew, co-ordinate the time frame for cabin and passenger preparation, brief passengers on ditching procedures, and secure carry-on baggage, lavatories and galleys before deploying and inflating slide rafts.
How many life rafts must an aircraft carry, and what must be in each?
Nig. CARs 7.10.1.3(b): enough capacity for all persons on board even after losing the largest raft. Each raft carries an electric survivor locator light, a survival kit, a pyrotechnic signalling device and an ELT, and all rafts are stowed to facilitate ready use.
Where must cabin crew be during taxi, and where during take-off and landing?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.4: during taxi, at their duty stations with safety belt and shoulder harness fastened, leaving only for duties related to safety. During take-off and landing, as near as practicable to required floor-level exits and uniformly distributed, so egress is most effective in an evacuation.
A flight needs 5 cabin crew. Passengers stay on board while parked. Minimum crew on board?
Two. Nig. CARs 9.3.1.7(c) requires one-half the number required for the flight, and its Note permits rounding a fraction down, so 2.5 becomes 2. The floor is never fewer than one cabin crew member or another person qualified in that aircraft's emergency evacuation procedures, spaced through the cabin per 8.9.2.4.
When does the required pre-take-off briefing have to cover oxygen?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.17(a)(7): only when the flight is above 3 050 m (10 000 ft) MSL, and then it covers normal and emergency use. The other required items apply on every flight, including smoking limits, exits, safety belts, flotation means, fire extinguishers, seat backs and the briefing card.
What extra briefing does a passenger of reduced mobility receive before each take-off?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.17: the PIC or co-pilot ensures they are personally briefed on the route to the most appropriate exit and on the time to begin moving to it in an emergency. Nig. CARs 8.9.2.10 separately bars seating that impedes crew duties, equipment access or evacuation.
Who decides whether a passenger may occupy an emergency exit row, and on what basis?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.11: the PIC or senior cabin crew member, based on whether the passenger is likely to be unable to understand and perform the exit functions. These include reaching, grasping and manipulating the operating mechanisms and lifting out an object the size and mass of an over-wing exit.
What must happen before passenger entry doors close for taxi or pushback?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.14: at least one required crew member must have verified that each article of baggage is properly stowed in overhead racks with approved restraining devices or doors, or in approved locations. No location may be loaded beyond its maximum placard mass limitation.
Passengers remain on board at an intermediate stop. What three conditions must hold?
Nig. CARs 8.9.2.8: all engines shut down, at least one floor-level exit remaining open for deplaning, and at least one person immediately available who is qualified in emergency evacuation of that aircraft and who has been identified to the passengers as responsible for their safety.
Who must ensure the passenger briefing happens, and can that duty be delegated?
Nig. CARs 8.9.1.4: the PIC ensures crew and passengers are familiar with belts, exits, life jackets, oxygen and other emergency equipment. Where cabin crew are required, the PIC may delegate the briefing but must still ascertain that it was properly conducted before take-off. Accountability does not transfer.
What makes NCAA initial crew resource management training different from a cabin-only course?
Nig. CARs 8.10.1.12(c): each AOC holder must ensure that initial CRM training for flight operations officers and aircraft crew members is joint. A programme that trains cabin crew in isolation does not satisfy 8.10.1.12, and 8.10.1.34 likewise requires recurrent CRM to be joint with flight crew.
List the five elements of recurrent cabin crew ground training, noting which are joint.
Nig. CARs 8.10.1.34: aircraft-specific configuration, equipment and procedures; joint emergency equipment and drills with flight crew; joint CRM with flight crew and flight operations officers; recognition or transportation of dangerous goods; and security training. Two of the five are explicitly joint with the flight deck.
How much supervised line experience must a new cabin crew member complete?
Nig. CARs 8.10.1.28: under the supervision of a check person, a minimum of two flights on turbojet aircraft, or two flights including at least 5 hours flown on reciprocating-engine or turbopropeller aircraft. Two short turboprop sectors can meet the flight count without meeting the hours.
What does a period of inactivity longer than 60 months cost a cabin crew member?
Nig. CARs 8.10.1.34: the full initial AOC training programme in IS 8.10.1.14C plus the competency check in IS 8.10.1.24. Inactivity up to 12 months needs only recurrent ground curricula and a competency check; 12 to 60 months needs the refresher ground curricula in IS 8.10.1.34(b).
What duty does Nig. CARs place on a crew member who suspects they are fatigued?
Nig. CARs 8.11.1.4: a person shall not act as a crew member in commercial air transport if they know or suspect they are suffering fatigue that may endanger the flight. The mirror duty binds the operator, who may not cause or permit that person to fly.
Which elements must an operator's crew security training programme contain, as a minimum?
Nig. CARs 8.10.1.11: determining the seriousness of an occurrence, crew communication and coordination, appropriate self-defence responses, use of authorised non-lethal protective devices, understanding terrorist behaviour, live situational exercises, flight deck protection procedures, and aeroplane search procedures with least-risk bomb location guidance.
What is a NOTOC, and where must a copy of it stay?
Nig. CARs 15.5.1.1: the Notification to Captain, written dangerous goods information the operator gives the PIC as early as practicable before departure. A copy must be retained on the ground and readily accessible at the aerodromes of last departure and next scheduled arrival until the flight ends.
Which categories are forbidden by air unless the States concerned grant an exemption?
Nig. CARs 15.2.2.3: infected live animals, weapons and ammunition, explosives unless required for the aircraft's own operation, poisonous gases, infectious substances, radioactive material and similar substances, plus anything the Technical Instructions forbid in normal circumstances. This is separate from goods forbidden under any circumstances.
Where are the limits on dangerous goods carried by passengers and crew actually written?
Not in Nig. CARs. Regulation 15.2.3.2 excepts specified passenger and crew articles only to the extent set out in the ICAO Technical Instructions, which Nig. CARs 15.2.1.4 adopts. Quote the current Technical Instructions edition for battery and article limits, never a Nig. CARs paragraph.
Compare the recurrent intervals for dangerous goods training and security training.
Nig. CARs 8.10.1.10 sets dangerous goods recurrent training at every 24 months, while 8.10.1.11 requires the approved recurrent security curriculum within 12 calendar months. Separately, 8.10.1.34 makes dangerous goods recognition and security training part of the 12-monthly cabin crew recurrent ground curricula.
How many first-aid kits must an aircraft carry, and where are they placed?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.11(a): one kit up to 100 passenger seats, two for 101-200, rising to six above 500. They must be distributed evenly through the aircraft, readily accessible to cabin crew where cabin crew are required, and located near the exits for use outside the aircraft.
When must an aircraft carry a universal precaution kit, and when are two needed?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.11(b): one kit on any aircraft that requires a cabin crew member. Aircraft authorised to carry more than 250 passengers need two, plus any additional kits the Authority determines at times of increased public health risk, such as an outbreak of a disease with pandemic potential.
Which flights must carry an emergency medical kit, and who may use it?
Nig. CARs 7.9.1.12: passenger flights in an aeroplane authorised to carry more than 100 passengers on a sector length of more than two hours. Both conditions must be met. It is for the use of medical doctors or other qualified persons, and must be stored in a secure location.

What is the pass mark for the NCAA cabin crew knowledge test?
NCAA-AC-PEL018 (June 2023) paragraph 3.8.1 requires candidates to obtain not less than 75% of the possible marks for each subject, and its Cabin Crew Licence subject list carries an overall pass mark of 75%. The NCAA FAQ page states the same 75% figure for its knowledge tests. Nig. CARs 2.2.5.5(d) leaves the figure to the Authority rather than printing it in the regulation.
How many questions are on the NCAA cabin crew exam and how long does it last?
NCAA publishes neither figure. NCAA-AC-PEL018 paragraph 3.6 says the time allowed for each examination is given to the applicant at booking and again by the invigilator before the paper starts. The NCAA Schedule of Fees prices two separate papers for a cabin crew candidate: Air Law (All Licences) at item 5.13.1 and Aircraft Specific Cabin Crew (Per Aircraft) at item 5.13.7.
What happens if I fail some subjects on the NCAA cabin crew paper?
NCAA-AC-PEL018 paragraph 3.10.1 requires a single sitting in all subjects. A candidate who passes not less than 50% of the subjects is awarded a partial pass and gets two further attempts, but must pass all subjects within 90 days of the first sitting. Failing that, the candidate waits not less than 30 days before re-sitting. Nig. CARs 2.2.5.5(g) also requires further instructor training and an endorsement before any retake.
Which class of medical certificate does a Nigerian cabin crew member need?
A Class 2 medical certificate, under Nig. CARs 2.5.1.3(b) and 2.11.2.7(a). Class 3 in Nig. CARs is the air traffic controller certificate, so any answer pairing cabin crew with Class 3 is wrong. The Class 2 certificate for a cabin crew licence is valid 24 months, reduced to 12 months once the holder has passed their 40th birthday (Nig. CARs 2.11.1.8(c)).
How long is a Nigerian cabin crew licence valid?
Nig. CARs 2.5.1.3(h) sets the validity period at 5 years. The licence separately becomes invalid when the holder has ceased to exercise its privileges for 1 year, and remains invalid until that ability is re-established. A knowledge test result is valid for 24 calendar months preceding the month the skill test is completed (Nig. CARs 2.2.5.5(e)).
Can a foreign cabin crew attestation be converted to a Nigerian licence?
No. Nig. CARs 2.2.4.3 states that Nigeria does not validate or convert Air Traffic Controller, Cabin Crew and Air Traffic Safety Electronic Personnel licences and ratings. The holder must complete an initial course with a Nigerian AOC holder or Approved Training Organisation, hold a Class 2 medical certificate, and pass the NCAA knowledge and skill tests as a first-time applicant. Flight crew licences, by contrast, can be validated under 2.2.4.1.
