Frequently Asked Questions
What is the format of the Massachusetts Core pesticide applicator exam?
The MDAR Core (Applicator License) exam is a 125-question, closed-book, multiple-choice exam delivered online through Everblue with remote proctoring (webcam plus Respondus LockDown Browser). Candidates get 2 hours to complete it and must score 70% (87 of 125 questions) to pass. Category-specific exams (about 50 questions each), such as Turf or Structural Pest Control, are administered separately after the Core exam is passed.
What happens if I fail the Massachusetts pesticide exam?
Under 333 CMR 10.08, a candidate who fails an exam once may immediately reapply and pay the fee again to retest on the next available date - there is no mandatory waiting period after a first failure. A second failure of the same exam triggers a mandatory 3-month wait before reapplying, and a third failure triggers a full 1-year wait before the candidate may attempt that exam again.
What are the four Massachusetts pesticide credential types?
MDAR issues four credentials: the Applicator License (Core), Private Certification (for applying pesticides on one's own agricultural land), Commercial Certification (for-hire use of restricted-use pesticides, requiring 2 or more years of prior licensure in the past 5 years), and the Dealer License (for selling restricted-use products). Most credentials require passing the Core exam plus any relevant category exam.
How do I keep my Massachusetts pesticide credential active?
All Massachusetts pesticide credentials expire December 31 each year regardless of issue date, so renewal is required annually through the EEA ePLACE Portal. Every 3 years, license holders must also complete 12 hours of continuing education, with a maximum of 6 of those hours coming from on-demand/online courses.
Does Massachusetts require employer sponsorship to take the pesticide exam?
No. Unlike some professional licensing exams, anyone can register and sit for the MDAR Core exam without an employer or company sponsoring the application. Commercial Certification is the one credential with an experience prerequisite - it requires the candidate to have already held an Applicator License or certification for 2 or more of the past 5 years before they are eligible to test for it.
