Integrated Reasoning: official section

Integrated Reasoning has 12 questions in 30 minutes. It measures evaluating information in multiple formats and from multiple sources.

Integrated Reasoning question types

The four official types are Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphics Interpretation, Two-Part Analysis, and Table Analysis.

Multi-Source Reasoning

Use information across multiple text or data sources. Track which source supports each claim before drawing a combined conclusion.

Multi-Source Reasoning: efficient reading

Read the task first, then open the source that can answer it. Do not try to memorize every detail from every source before answering.

Graphics Interpretation

Interpret a graph or visual display. Check labels, units, scale, and direction before estimating a value or comparison.

Chart scale trap

A visual gap is meaningful only relative to the scale. Confirm whether an axis starts at zero and whether increments are equal before comparing bars or points.

Two-Part Analysis

Choose one response in each of two columns. Solve both parts and make sure the selected pair satisfies the same conditions in the prompt.

Two-Part Analysis: linked answers

The two choices may be related. Test whether the first choice restricts what can be true in the second rather than treating the columns as independent.

Table Analysis

Use a sortable table to evaluate statements. Identify the relevant column, apply any condition, and compare only the rows that qualify.

Table sorting strategy

Sort on the variable that directly tests the claim, then inspect the boundary rows. Sorting can reveal a ranking or threshold faster than scanning every row.

Correlation vs. causation

A relationship between two variables does not prove one caused the other. Look for an alternative cause, reverse direction, or missing comparison.

Percentage change

Percentage change = (new − old) ÷ old. The original value, not the new value, is the usual base for the calculation.

Weighted average

A weighted average gives larger groups more influence. Multiply each value by its group size, add, then divide by the total group size.

Data sufficiency in an IR task

Ask whether the provided information determines the requested conclusion, not whether it allows a full calculation that the task never requires.

Integrated Reasoning pacing

Twelve questions in 30 minutes averages 2.5 minutes each. Prioritize the data needed for the task instead of reading every display in equal depth.

Verbal Reasoning: official section

Verbal Reasoning has 14 questions in 30 minutes. It measures evaluating arguments and reading, understanding, and editing standard English.

Verbal Reasoning question types

The official types are Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction.

Critical Reasoning: conclusion

The conclusion is the claim the author wants you to accept. Evidence supports it; background may explain the situation without proving it.

Critical Reasoning: assumption

An assumption is an unstated idea required for the evidence to support the conclusion. If it fails, the argument loses its connection.

Strengthen an argument

Choose new information that supports the link between evidence and conclusion or rules out a plausible alternative explanation.

Weaken an argument

Choose information that challenges a key assumption, offers another cause, or shows the evidence is not representative of the conclusion.

Necessary-assumption test

Negate the proposed assumption. If the argument collapses, the statement was necessary; if it still stands, it was not required.

Evidence vs. inference

An inference must be supported by the passage or facts. A statement may sound plausible yet go beyond what the information establishes.

Reading Comprehension: main idea

The main idea states the passage’s central point or purpose. It should account for the whole passage, not just one vivid example.

Reading Comprehension: author stance

Look for qualifiers, contrasts, and evaluative language. The author may report a view without endorsing it.

Reading Comprehension: scope

Keep the answer within the passage’s population, time frame, and conditions. Extreme or universal claims often exceed the stated scope.

Sentence Correction: meaning first

Choose a revision that expresses the intended meaning clearly and logically. A grammatically tidy sentence can still be wrong if its meaning shifts.

Subject-verb agreement

Find the true subject, then match the verb to it. Prepositional phrases and intervening nouns can distract from the controlling subject.

Pronoun reference

A pronoun should refer clearly to one logical noun. Ambiguous “it,” “they,” or “which” can make a sentence unclear even when agreement looks correct.

Parallelism

Items in a list or comparison should have matching grammatical forms. Parallel structure makes relationships clear and avoids unintended shifts.

Modifier placement

Place a modifier next to the word it describes. A misplaced opening phrase can make it appear that the wrong actor performed an action.

Comparison logic

Compare like with like. If a sentence compares a company’s revenue, the other side should also be revenue—not the company itself.

Concise is not automatically correct

Prefer the clearest grammatically correct expression of the intended meaning. Brevity helps only when it does not omit a necessary relationship.

Quantitative pacing

Fourteen questions in 30 minutes averages a little over 2 minutes each. Define the target before calculating and avoid doing algebra that the question does not require.

Quantitative Reasoning: official section

Quantitative Reasoning has 14 questions in 30 minutes. It measures analyzing data and drawing conclusions using secondary-school-level mathematics.

Quantitative Reasoning question types

The official types are Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving.

Data Sufficiency: the task

Decide whether the statements provide enough information to answer the question uniquely. Do not solve for more than the question asks.

Data Sufficiency: statement one

Evaluate statement 1 by itself and stop. Mark whether it is sufficient before looking for help from statement 2.

Data Sufficiency: statement two

Evaluate statement 2 by itself, ignoring statement 1. This prevents accidentally combining information too early.

Data Sufficiency: together

Combine the statements only after testing each alone. Together they are sufficient only if they produce one definite answer to the question.

Data Sufficiency: one example is not enough

A statement is sufficient only if every allowed case gives the same answer. Find a second valid case to test whether uniqueness fails.

Problem Solving: define the target

Before calculating, state what quantity the question asks for and its units. This avoids solving a related but different problem.

Rate relationship

Distance = rate × time. Keep units consistent, especially when time is split between minutes and hours.

Ratio vs. difference

A ratio compares by division; a difference compares by subtraction. “Twice as many” describes a ratio, not an increase of two.

Average

Average = total ÷ number of values. If group sizes differ, combine totals and counts rather than averaging the group averages directly.

Percent increase then decrease

A rise of x% followed by a fall of x% does not return to the start, because the second percentage uses a different base.

Algebra: preserve equality

Apply the same operation to both sides of an equation. When multiplying or dividing an inequality by a negative number, reverse its direction.

Integer properties

Test divisibility, parity, and sign deliberately. A variable described as an integer may be positive, negative, or zero unless the question adds a restriction.

Estimation as an error check

Estimate the size and sign of a result before finalizing. An answer far from a reasonable range can reveal a decimal, unit, or operation error.

Executive Assessment sub-sections

GMAC divides the EA into IR 6+6, Verbal 7+7, and Quantitative 7+7 question sub-sections. You may review or change answers only within the current sub-section before moving on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this Executive Assessment flashcard set allocated?

GMAC’s current EA has 12 Integrated Reasoning, 14 Verbal Reasoning, and 14 Quantitative Reasoning questions. Scaling 12/14/14 to 50 produces 15, 17.5, and 17.5 cards; largest remainder gives 15 IR, 18 Verbal, and 17 Quantitative, with the tie resolved by published section order.

How long is the Executive Assessment and how many questions does it have?

GMAC lists 40 questions in 90 minutes: 12 Integrated Reasoning questions, 14 Verbal Reasoning questions, and 14 Quantitative Reasoning questions. Each section is 30 minutes.

Is the Executive Assessment adaptive?

Yes. GMAC describes its official EA practice assessments as using adaptive question delivery. The assessment is organized into two sub-sections per section: 6 and 6 IR questions, then 7 and 7 Verbal, then 7 and 7 Quantitative.

Can I review or change an Executive Assessment answer?

GMAC allows review and changes only within the current sub-section. At its review screen you can return to skipped questions; once you move to the next sub-section, earlier answers cannot be changed.

What score do I need to pass the Executive Assessment?

There is no universal pass score. GMAC reports each section on a 0–20 scale and the equally weighted total on a 100–200 scale; ask each program how it evaluates scores.

How long are EA scores valid and when can I retake it?

GMAC says EA scores are valid for 5 years from the test date and available for reporting for up to 10 years. You must wait at least 24 hours between attempts, with up to 6 lifetime attempts: 3 at a test center and 3 online.
