Frequently Asked Questions

What topics make up the biggest share of the CA Esthetician exam?

Safety and Infection Control is the single largest domain at 40% of the exam, covering CA BBC sanitation and disinfection rules, EPA-registered disinfectants, and bloodborne pathogen procedures. Client Consultation & Skin Analysis (19%) and Skin Care Treatments (17%) follow, with Hair Removal (15%), Eyelash & Eyebrow (6%), and Makeup (3%) rounding out the blueprint.

Is the California Esthetician exam still a hands-on practical test?

No. Since SB 803 took effect on January 1, 2022, California requires only a written exam - 75 scored questions plus 10 unscored pretest questions in 90 minutes - for esthetician licensure. There is no in-person practical or skills demonstration.

What happens if I fail the CA Esthetician exam?

There is no limit on the number of retakes, and the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology does not impose a mandatory waiting period. You submit a new re-examination application through BreEZe, pay the required fee, and schedule a new PSI test appointment; the practical delay depends on PSI's available testing slots in your area.

Do I need continuing education to renew my CA esthetician license?

No. California does not require continuing education hours to renew an esthetician license. The license simply renews every two years, based on your original issue date, for a standard fee, with no CE credits to track.

Can I transfer an out-of-state esthetician license to California instead of retesting?

Yes, in most cases. California offers reciprocity: submit a reciprocity application with proof of a current, unrestricted esthetician license in good standing from another state. Exceptions apply - apprentice licenses and certain out-of-state license types (Puerto Rico, Guam, and Florida's full/facial/nail specialist licenses) do not qualify, and those applicants must pass the CA written exam.
