Official materials versus everything else
The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are confidential operational papers. You will not find last year's live Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) or Mathematics (MAT) booklet on a school drive, and you should not look for one. The National Benchmark Tests Project (NBTP) FAQ states that past tests are not available to anyone. The same FAQ states that NBTP does not endorse commercial preparation courses and questions the value those courses purport to offer. Preparation that respects those two sentences looks different from National Senior Certificate (NSC) revision: you practise transferable academic, quantitative, and mathematical skills on official exemplars and on original items, not on leaked operational papers.

Confidential papers, equal treatment, and commercial courses
NBTP keeps operational papers out of the public domain so that writers are treated equally. NSC papers are later published for school revision; NBT papers are not. Anyone advertising "real NBT past papers" or "this year's leaked MAT" is selling something CEA does not release. Using that material is unreliable. It can also put you in an unethical position relative to other writers.
Commercial crash courses are a separate issue. Organisations may sell downloads, weekend classes, or "guaranteed band" packages. None of those providers have authority to speak for NBTP, and none have special knowledge of live items. Extra lessons that strengthen academic reading, calculator-free quantitative reasoning, or unscaffolded algebra are ordinary schooling. They still do not turn a tutor into an official NBT insider. If a resource's selling point is secret operational items, walk away.
Where official exemplars actually live
CEA/NBTP publish a limited set of exemplars so writers can feel item style. Download them from https://www.nbt.ac.za:

Those PDFs are not full past papers. They do not predict live stems. They show cognitive demand: academic passages with four options, quantitative items that mix tables and text, MAT items that expect you to work before you look at options. Work each exemplar slowly once for method, then again under a clock for stamina. Do not memorise the four answers as if they will reappear.
The AQL teachers' booklet also states the published item share used later in this chapter: Academic Literacy (AL) ≈ 75 multiple-choice questions and Quantitative Literacy (QL) = 50. MAT's item count is not published on current nbt.ac.za Test Content — do not invent one from a local practice bank.
NBT versus NSC: complementary, not a duplicate school exam
CEA's NBT and NSC page draws a clean line. In each NBT domain, the test reflects how far a school-leaver applying to university is prepared for the core academic literacy, quantitative literacy, and mathematics demands of higher education. In each NSC subject, the examination reflects how far a Grade 12 student met Curriculum Statement expectations as expressed in the Subject Assessment Guidelines.
Those are two different questions about the same learner. A high NSC mark does not automatically produce a Proficient NBT band. A Proficient NBT band does not replace an NSC subject. Faculties may read both. This guide does not claim that NBT scores stand in for NSC results.

Academic Literacy versus NSC language papers
AL asks you to make meaning from university-style text: communicative function, inference, vocabulary in context, cohesion, essential versus non-essential information, genre, tone, and visual or numerical information inside a passage. It is not an NSC English or Afrikaans literature and language paper. Setwork essays and school language-structure sections do not transfer one-for-one. The transferable piece is careful reading of unfamiliar non-fiction under time, in the one language you chose for the whole sitting.
Quantitative Literacy versus Mathematical Literacy
QL asks you to apply quantitative procedures in verbal, symbolic, and graphical situations that resemble first-year campus life: tables, charts, rates, ratios, shape, and chance, without a calculator. It is not the CAPS Mathematical Literacy examination. That subject has its own paper structure, formula-sheet habits, and calculator rules. QL still uses numbers that school taught; it does not clone that exam technique.
MAT versus NSC Mathematics
The MAT teachers' booklet is explicit: MAT tests do not attempt to replicate NSC Mathematics papers. NSC Mathematics must reflect the entire school mathematics curriculum. MAT is written only by applicants to programmes that require mathematics. MAT cannot test outside the school curriculum, but it is not required to include every CAPS topic, including topics often taught in the last weeks of Grade 12. CEA notes that writing later in the year has not been shown to advantage writers, while faculty deadlines may fall in June or July.
Format differences that change how you prep: MAT is unscaffolded multiple-choice with no "hence" parts; no calculator; some items ask for the expression, not a decimal; options include misconception distractors; and you choose the representation because the stem will not always name the topic.
Independent OpenExamPrep practice in this guide uses original stems and numbers.
