2.3 Benchmarks, Results & University Use

Quick Answer: Login about four weeks after writing (2026 brochure). Institutions can access the same results, so write once for multiple applications and meet the earliest deadline. Scores sit in Proficient, Intermediate, or Basic bands. There is no single national pass mark. Some universities use NBTs for admission, others for placement or academic support, and also for curriculum planning. Health Sciences requires both AQL and MAT; some deadlines fall in June or July.

How results are released

Plan from the test schedule, not from a guess that "four weeks" means the same weekday next month. Login approximately four weeks after writing (2026 brochure). FAQ 45 also notes institution release about three weeks after a session on the published schedule, with writer upload by 12:00 on the listed date. You only see scores if every registered sitting is paid, including an earlier missed test. Username is typically your ID number plus the password you created. You can email nbt@uct.ac.za four weeks after the session to request results. Staff may not release results by phone.

Results are valid for three years from the year you wrote. FAQ 48's example: write in May 2024 and the scores can still be used for the 2027 intake. Individual institutions may set their own validity rules, so confirm with the faculty rather than assuming the FAQ example overrides a prospectus.

Do not wait for a posted envelope. Faculties pull results from NBTP. Your job is to write early enough that the results-available date on the 2026 calendar sits before the faculty deadline.

Worked deadline scenario: June Health Sciences versus later general admission

Lebo wants MBChB. Health Sciences faculties require both AQL and MAT, and some results deadlines sit in June or July. She also applies for BCom with a September deadline. One sitting serves both applications. If she books a late-August paper session, the Health Sciences office will not have scores in time. She picks a May or early-June date whose "results available to institutions" column is still before the Health Sciences cut-off, then puts the writer login date in her calendar.

If two institutions publish different deadlines, register to meet the earliest one, even if another university will let students write during registration week.

Trap: counting four weeks from a Sunday sitting and opening the login on a random Thursday that is not the schedule date. Trap: assuming unpaid sitting one will still release sitting two. Trap: phoning 021 650 3523 on results morning and expecting a verbal band.

Bands, not a national pass mark

Performance on the NBTs is placed in one of three published benchmark categories on the interpreting-your-results page:

• Proficient
• Intermediate
• Basic

National reports often discuss Intermediate Lower and Intermediate Upper as a split of the middle band. Treat that as reporting language used in aggregate documents, not as a licence to invent a fourth personal-login category or to paste percentage cut scores into this independent guide.

There is no single national pass mark. Do not convert a band name into a percentage, a university APS, or a "you need 70" rule copied from another exam. Each university and faculty decides how to use the information. Benchmarks are reset about every three years. A story from an older sibling's cycle may not match the current surfaces, and this chapter will not invent numeric cut scores.

Trap: reading NBT bands as if they replaced the NSC

NBTP describes the tests as extra information about academic readiness. They support, but do not replace or duplicate, National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. A Basic band is not an automatic faculty refusal written into national law, and a Proficient band is not a guaranteed offer. Admission offices still apply their own published rules.

How universities actually use the scores

The 2026 brochure is explicit about mixed use:

• Some South African higher education institutions use NBTs for admission.
• Others use them to decide whether you will need extra academic support during your studies (placement).
• They also help with curriculum development.

That mix is why two faculties can treat the same login screenshot differently. Always read the faculty page for the programme you want, not a rumour from a different campus or a different year.

Health Sciences: all applicants to programmes in Health Science faculties must write both AQL and MAT. Each institution sets its own deadline; some are in June and July. Those faculties work with NBTP on seating supply, but they do not move a June deadline because you booked in August.

You need only write once when applying to more than one institution. All institutions to which you apply can access the NBT results.

Worked interpretation scenario: same login, three faculties

Nomsa logs in four weeks after a Saturday sitting. Her domains show Intermediate and Proficient labels — no national percentage on a pass line. Faculty A uses NBTs as an admission input with a July file date. Faculty B uses them after registration for support modules. Faculty C (Health Sciences) required MAT the same day as AQL and will not look at an AQL-only file. She checks each faculty's published use and whether a second write would even be considered. A re-mark (R250, within 30 days, about four more weeks) can collide with a June deadline; it is a scoring check, not extra tuition.

What this independent chapter will not tell you
