About the WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits Exam

Quick Answer: The WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits is assessed by a closed-book theory exam of 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. You need 55% to pass (28 correct answers), 70% for a pass with merit and 85% for a pass with distinction. Under Specification Issue 2.1 (2026), the questions are split 15 / 23 / 8 / 4 across the four Learning Outcomes.

The WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits is an intermediate qualification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. It is aimed at people with little or no prior knowledge of spirits, such as bar staff, retail and wholesale staff, and enthusiasts, and it is recommended preparation for the WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits. The course is taught by WSET Approved Programme Providers (APPs), in the classroom or online, and is available in several languages.

What the 50 Questions Cover

The exam is set from four Learning Outcomes (LOs). Specification Issue 2.1 fixes how many questions come from each:

Learning OutcomeWhat it coversQuestionsShareWhere to study it in this guide
LO1The main production factors that affect a spirit's style: raw materials, fermentation, pot and column distillation, post-distillation operations1530%Chapters 1–2
LO2How the principal spirits are produced and labelled, and their key characteristics: fruit spirits, whisky/whiskey, sugar cane spirits, agave spirits, vodka2346%Chapters 3–7
LO3Flavoured spirits and aromatised wines: flavouring methods, spiced rum, flavoured vodka, gin, aniseed spirits, bitter spirits, cocktail bitters, liqueurs, vermouth and other aromatised wines816%Chapters 8–9
LO4The principles of a balanced cocktail (two sets of scales) and four core cocktail families48%Chapter 10

Chapter 10 also covers the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits, which supports the whole course.

Important

Older study materials based on the 2017 specification used different weights (14 / 23 / 7 / 6), and their LO4 covered bar equipment and glassware. The current specification (Issue 2, fully revised in 2022, and the rebranded Issue 2.1 in 2026) replaced that LO4 content with cocktail balance and cocktail families. It also added topics such as Group 1/2/3 fractions, cane syrup, the agave diffuser, bitter spirits and cocktail bitters, and quinquina and Americano. Study from current materials.

Exam-Day Rules Worth Knowing

  • Bring photographic ID.
  • No reference material of any kind. Only pens, pencils, erasers and drinking water are allowed at the desk.
  • No electronic devices except a computer or device being used to sit the exam. Mobile phones must be switched off and out of sight.
  • In-person sittings: you cannot leave during the first 15 minutes, and candidates arriving more than 30 minutes late are normally not admitted.
  • Taking photographs of exam materials, or revealing exam content to others, is misconduct.

Results and resits. WSET sends results to your APP, which forwards your record of achievement and certificate. If you fail, there is no limit on the number of resits. If you pass, you may not retake the exam to improve your grade. Enquiries (re-marks) and appeals are made through your APP.

How to Use This Guide

Nearly half the paper (23 questions) comes from LO2, so spend the most time on Chapters 3–7. Learn each category's legal controls and labelling terms as lists and tables. Production factors (LO1) carry 15 questions, and they also explain why the LO2 categories taste the way they do, so start with Chapters 1–2.

A few numbers come up again and again:

  • Cognac: VS at least 2 years, VSOP 4, XO 10.
  • Scotch whisky: at least 3 years in oak casks of no more than 700 litres, in Scotland.
  • Bourbon: at least 51% corn, new charred oak containers, distilled to no more than 80% abv and entered into the barrel at no more than 62.5% abv.
  • Tequila: at least 51% blue agave, or 100% for "100% agave".
  • Vodka: distilled to at least 95% abv (USA) or 96% abv (EU).
  • Liqueurs: must be sweetened, at least 100 g/L in the EU.

Finish each section by answering its practice questions without looking back, then revisit any topic where you hesitated.
