Master Decision Set: Delay, Shelter, Slow, Reroute

When weather deteriorates — or is forecast to — the professional toolkit is limited and clear:

  1. Delay departure — wait for the front, the sea breeze peak, or the fog to lift. Tide and current windows still apply; sometimes delaying also improves the bar.
  2. Seek shelter — reverse course to harbor, tuck behind a point, or enter a protected anchorage before conditions peak. Shelter chosen late is shelter missed.
  3. Reduce speed — lower impact loads, improve control, reduce boarding seas, and give the lookout time in rain and spray. Slow is not weak; slow is often what keeps the windows intact and the passengers seated.
