Shackle Inspection and Safe Use

Inspection begins by matching the shackle body and pin to their certificate or traceable product information. A complete shackle is then assessed for condition and for suitability in the proposed connection.


Pre-use Check

Clean enough of the shackle to see the surface without removing protective material by an unauthorised process. Confirm:

  • WLL and manufacturer or traceability marks are legible;
  • body and pin belong to the same documented type and size;
  • pin threads engage fully and the retaining system is complete;
  • body, crown, eyes and pin are free from cracks, bending and harmful distortion;
  • bearing surfaces do not have excessive wear, gouging or corrosion;
  • there is no heat damage, arc strike, weld repair or unauthorised machining; and
  • the proposed connectors fit without crowding, wedging or point loading.

Any crack or visibly bent body is grounds for immediate withdrawal. Other dimensional limits, including pin wear, body wear and jaw spread, come from the applicable manufacturer or product standard. Ten percent is a common discard value for some shackles, but it must not be applied as a universal rule without the governing criterion and original dimension.


Loading Direction

The normal rating is for the documented in-line condition. If the force will deviate from the shackle centreline, first confirm that the exact product permits side loading. Published reductions such as 70% at 45° and 50% at 90° occur in some manufacturer charts; they are not a universal “LEEA shackle table.” Apply only the chart supplied for that model and define the angle in the way that chart uses it.

A dee shackle is generally kept in line. A bow shackle offers room for articulation but may still require an angle reduction or may prohibit the proposed direction. Avoid a three-direction pull that spreads the body unless the manufacturer explicitly rates that arrangement.


Pin and Bearing Control

Put the component expected to move on the body or pin position specified by the manufacturer. Do not let a live sling rub across screw-pin threads or rotate a screw pin loose. After tightening, check that a screw pin is fully engaged in the intended manner; do not extend a wrench with an improvised bar unless instructions require a specified torque tool.

For a bolt-type shackle, fit the correct nut and new or serviceable retaining device as required. The pin must not be replaced with a general structural bolt. Do not weld a pin in place, tack the nut or drill an unapproved retaining hole.

A connector that is too narrow can point-load the pin or crown. One that is too wide can spread the legs. Multiple sling eyes can crowd and load one another. Check pin diameter against the sling-eye or thimble requirements and ensure the connected lug is not so thick that the shackle cannot articulate.


Wear and Measurement

Where a dimensional check is required, use the manufacturer's original nominal or recorded dimension and the specified measurement location. Wear is not calculated from a convenient painted area or an assumed catalogue size. If a 25 mm pin is measured at 22 mm, the loss is:

(25 - 22) / 25 × 100 = 12%.

The arithmetic is correct, but the action comes from the product criterion. Withdraw and quarantine the shackle pending competent assessment; do not simply “re-rate” it or decide on site that a new pin will solve body wear.

Surface gouges require evaluation of depth, location and sharpness. Grinding can remove more section and must not be performed without an authorised repair procedure. NDT may be selected for a suspected crack, but it is not a routine operator substitute for visual inspection.


Thorough Examination and Disposal

As lifting accessories, shackles normally fall under LOLER's six-month default thorough-examination interval unless a competent-person examination scheme sets another interval. Exceptional circumstances that may jeopardise safety also trigger examination. A colour code or inspection tag helps control status but is not the statutory report.

Rejected equipment should be quarantined and recorded. Repair or return to service requires a manufacturer-approved or authorised process with appropriate verification. If disposal is required, make the item unusable through the site's controlled method, considering hot-work and cutting hazards.

Use this decision sequence: identify, fit, align, secure, inspect. If the product chart or original dimension is missing, the correct action is verification—not a remembered percentage.
