Theoretical Lectures and Theory Test Format

After successfully opening a traffic file and obtaining a Traffic File Number, candidates enter the theoretical training phase. In Sharjah, this phase is managed exclusively by the Sharjah Driving Institute (SDI). Theoretical training is designed to provide new drivers with a solid foundation in road rules, defensive driving tactics, and hazard recognition. Completing this theoretical curriculum is a mandatory legal prerequisite; candidates are not permitted to begin practical behind-the-wheel training until they have completed all lectures and passed the official computer-based theory test.

Enrollment and Classroom Formats at SDI

Candidates must enroll in the theoretical course at the Sharjah Driving Institute’s main campus (located in the Al Ramtha area of Sharjah) or at one of its regional branches in Kalba, Khorfakkan, or Al Dhaid. To accommodate different schedules and preferences, SDI offers two primary learning methods:

1. In-Person Lectures: Classes are held in classrooms at SDI campuses. Students must scan their physical Emirates ID at the entrance of the lecture hall to log their attendance. The lectures are conducted by certified driving instructors in various languages.
2. E-Learning (Online Portal): Candidates can access the theoretical lectures through SDI’s secure e-learning portal. The system tracks progress using mandatory timers, requiring the student to spend a set amount of time on each page. At the end of each module, the student must pass a short quiz to unlock the next lecture.

The Eight Mandatory Theoretical Lectures

The theoretical curriculum consists of eight distinct lectures, each focusing on a specific aspect of road safety and vehicle control. Every module is designed to prepare the learner for the questions they will encounter on the theory test:

• Lecture 1: Traffic Rules and Regulations: This module covers the legal framework of UAE traffic law. It explains speed limits, right-of-way rules, overtaking laws, seatbelt regulations, child restraint requirements, and the traffic black points system.
• Lecture 2: Traffic Signs and Road Markings: This lecture focuses on sign recognition. It details regulatory signs (which must be obeyed, such as Stop and No Entry), warning signs (which alert drivers to hazards ahead), guide signs (which provide directional information), and road markings (such as solid and dashed lines, pedestrian crossings, and lane arrows).
• Lecture 3: Urban Driving and Intersections: Students learn how to safely navigate city streets. This includes understanding the correct lane positioning when approaching junctions, rules for navigating different types of roundabouts, sharing the road with public transport, and yielding to pedestrians.
• Lecture 4: Highway and Expressway Driving: This module explains the dynamics of high-speed driving. Key topics include maintaining safe following distances, lane discipline on multi-lane highways, joining and exiting highways safely using acceleration and deceleration lanes, and managing high-speed overtaking.
• Lecture 5: Driving in Adverse Weather Conditions: Sharjah often experiences extreme weather events. This lecture teaches drivers how to adjust their speed and following distance during dense fog, heavy rain, sandstorms, and extreme summer heat. It covers the use of fog lights and how to handle low-visibility conditions.
• Lecture 6: Hazard Perception and Defensive Driving: This module introduces the concept of defensive driving—driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others. Students learn how to scan the road ahead, identify potential hazards early, and respond appropriately before a hazard becomes an emergency.
• Lecture 7: Driver Condition and Behaviour: The physical and mental state of the driver is critical. This lecture addresses the dangers of driving while fatigued, the hazards of mobile phone distractions, the legal consequences of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and techniques for managing stress and avoiding road rage.
• Lecture 8: Vehicle State and Maintenance: The final module covers basic vehicle mechanics and safety checks. Students learn how to inspect tires for wear and pressure, verify braking systems, perform weekly fluid checks, and understand dashboard warning lights (such as oil pressure, battery charge, and engine malfunction).

The Computer-Based Theory Test Logistics

Once all eight lectures are completed and logged in the SDI system, the candidate is authorized to book the official Sharjah Police Theory Test. The test is administered at the SDI campus in a dedicated computer testing hall.

Exam Design and Formatting

The exam is computer-based, using touch-screen terminals to present questions to candidates. The key parameters of the test are:

• Number of Questions: The test comprises 25 multiple-choice questions.
• Time Limit: The test has a strict duration of 20 minutes. A countdown timer is displayed on the screen.
• Passing Score: To pass, candidates must answer at least 18 questions correctly (72%).
• Languages Available: The exam is available in Arabic, English, and Urdu to accommodate the major linguistic groups in Sharjah. Voice-overs are available for candidates who require assistance with reading.

The questions are randomly selected from a large question bank, covering the traffic signs, rules, and hazard scenarios taught in the eight lectures. The computer testing system does not allow candidates to use external materials, mobile phones, or notes. Original physical Emirates IDs must be verified by the examiner before entering the exam room.

Failures, Retake Fees, and the Cooling-Off Period

If a candidate passes, the system instantly updates their traffic file, and they can proceed to book their practical training lessons.

If a candidate fails to achieve the passing score of 18 correct answers:

• They are not permitted to proceed to practical training.
• They must schedule a retake of the theory exam.
• The fee for retaking the theory exam is AED 50.
• A mandatory cooling-off period of 48 hours is enforced. The candidate cannot sit for the exam again until 48 hours have passed from the time of their failed attempt. This cooling-off period is designed to give the student sufficient time to review the study guide and retake mock tests before their next attempt.
