Pathogenic vs. Nonpathogenic Bacteria

Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that live everywhere — on skin, in soil, in water, and in the air. The exam expects you to split them into two groups:

  • Nonpathogenic bacteria — harmless, and many are beneficial. They make up the majority of bacteria you encounter. They help digest food, protect skin by crowding out invaders, and are used to make products like yogurt. They are not a concern for infection control.
  • Pathogenic bacteria — disease-causing organisms, sometimes called germs or microbes. Although they are the minority, they are the entire reason disinfection rules exist. Some produce toxins (poisons) that cause illness even after the bacteria themselves are gone.

A pathogen is any disease-causing organism — bacteria, virus, fungus, or parasite. When a question says "pathogen," do not assume it means bacteria only.

  • Staphylococci grow in grape-like clusters and are the most common pus-forming bacteria. They live on skin and cause boils, abscesses, and infected pustules — exactly the kind of infection that can follow a razor nick. MRSA is a drug-resistant staph.

Fungi: Tinea (Ringworm)

Fungi include molds and yeasts. The barbering-critical fungal group is tinea, the medical term for ringworm — named for the ring-shaped, scaly, itchy lesion it produces (there is no worm involved). Tinea is named by the body site it infects, and the exam will mix these up on purpose:

Cross-contamination on tools is the barber's biggest controllable risk, which is why clean-then-disinfect between every client is the core Texas rule.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne pathogens are disease organisms carried in blood and certain body fluids — chiefly HBV, HCV, and HIV. Barbers face real exposure because razors and shears can break skin. Any time blood is present, treat it as infectious (standard/universal precautions) and follow the exposure-incident procedure in Section 4.3.

Immunity

Immunity is the body's ability to resist and destroy pathogens:

  • Natural immunity — resistance that is partly inherited and partly developed through healthy living; it is general defense, not acquired from a specific disease or vaccine.
  • Acquired immunity — developed during life. Active acquired immunity results from having a disease (the body makes its own antibodies) or from vaccination (exposure to a safe form of the pathogen, as with the hepatitis B vaccine). Passive acquired immunity comes from receiving ready-made antibodies — for example, from mother to infant — and is temporary.
