  3. Choose the developer to match (volumes are in Section 8.2): deposit or minimal lift is a low-volume job, two to three levels needs more, beyond that it is a lightener job, not a tint job.

Underlying Pigment: What Lifting Exposes

Mixing, Timing, and the Strand Test

Mix immediately before use: oxidation starts the instant the two meet, so a standing mixture loses lifting and depositing power. Processing time starts when application ends, not when it begins: the last strand applied is the least processed, so timing from the first over-processes it. Corrective Color

Color does not lift color. Oxidative tint lifts natural melanin; it cannot remove artificial pigment already in the cortex. That rule drives every correction.

  • Going lighter than existing artificial color. Use a color remover (dye solvent), which removes artificial pigment while leaving natural melanin largely intact, or a lightener, which removes both and is the choice when you must also lift the natural level. Shampoo a remover out thoroughly — residue can reoxidize and darken.
  • Going darker over lightened hair — fill first. Lightened hair is porous and missing its warm pigment, so a dark formula grabs unevenly, turns muddy, and fades fast. A filler equalizes porosity and replaces the missing warmth: pre-fill the pigment that belongs at the target level — gold for a light target, orange or red for a dark one.
