The rules come from T.C.A. §§ 62-3-117, -119, -120, and -129 and Board Rules 0200-01-.06, -.11, and -.13.
The renewal cycle
- Expiration date. Master barber and barber instructor certificates expire every two years on the last day of the month in which the original certificate was granted. Technician and barber shop certificates also expire every two years. Barber schools renew every year (Rule 0200-01-.06).
- How to renew. Renew in the state's CORE online licensing system. The renewal option appears once you are within 60 days of your expiration date.
- Fee. Master barber renewal is $60 (Rule 0200-01-.11).
- Continuing education. Tennessee requires no continuing education to renew a master barber or technician license. Barber instructors must complete a Board-approved instructor-training program of at least 16 hours every two years (§ 62-3-124; Rule 0200-01-.14).
A reminder is a courtesy, not a requirement. If you do not renew on time, the license expires. The Board's renewal page warns that the ability to reinstate an expired license does not let you keep working. Practicing on an expired certificate is unlicensed practice.

The Board's renewal page states that penalties are "strictly enforced and never waived." It also states that there are no waivers to the rule that a license expired more than three years is invalid.
What the reinstatement test is. For a master barber license expired more than three years, the statute and rule call for a practical examination (§ 62-3-129; Rule 0200-01-.11). PSI currently offers the TN Master Barber Reinstatement test as two parts: a practical portion (about 195 minutes) and a Tennessee law portion (60 minutes), at $35 each. The reinstatement applicant does not have to repeat the 1,500 school hours; the rule excuses the education requirement in § 62-3-110(b)(3).
Other license types follow different rules:
- Technician. Late renewal within one year carries a $60 penalty. After more than one year, the technician must pass a practical and law examination to reinstate.
- Instructor. Renewal is $70, with a $70 late penalty within one year.
- Barber shop. Renewal is $75, with a $75 late penalty within one year.
Retirement
Under § 62-3-117, any licensee may retire a license. The Board's steps are to send a statement asking to retire the license, with your full name, license number, current mailing address, and a $50 fee (Rule 0200-01-.11). The Board then issues a retired license certificate.
- A retired licensee may not practice until the license is reactivated.
- Reactivation (Rule 0200-01-.13(2)) requires a written request, passing the practical and law portions of the exam, and paying the license fee. The Board may waive the exams if it finds that your experience and prior training are enough to protect the public.
Retirement is useful when you know you will stop cutting for a long time. It keeps the license from simply expiring and later becoming invalid.
Inactive status
Board Rule 0200-01-.06(5) and (6), amended effective December 24, 2025, let a master barber or barber instructor place a certificate in inactive status by email or written request before it expires. While inactive, you may not do anything that requires a license. To reactivate, send an email or written request and meet the requirements for reinstatement. The Board's web page still describes inactive status as instructor-only, so confirm with the Board office before you rely on it.
Military provisions
- Under § 62-3-120, the certificate of a barber, barber instructor, or technician who is inducted into the U.S. armed forces is automatically renewed at no charge for the period of service.
- Under Rule 0200-01-.06(9) to (11), a National Guard or reserve member called to active duty whose certificate expires during activation may renew without late fees for up to 6 months after release, with documentation.
Reciprocity for barbers licensed elsewhere
§ 62-3-115 lets the Board issue a master barber certificate without examination to a nonresident who meets one of these conditions:
- Holds a valid master barber license from a jurisdiction with substantially the same requirements, or one with a reciprocal agreement with Tennessee
- Proves by sworn affidavits at least 5 years of continuous, lawful practice in another jurisdiction immediately before applying
- Held a military occupational specialty as a barber for 2 or more years
Rule 0200-01-.06(7), under Tennessee's universal licensing recognition law (§ 4-3-1304), lets the Board either issue the license when another state's requirements are substantially equivalent or issue a temporary permit while the applicant completes added education, training, or experience.
The Board's reciprocity steps are:
- Ask every state where you have been licensed to send a certification of license directly to Tennessee. Only one license needs to be current.
- File the Out of State application for your license type in CORE and pay the non-refundable fee. Rule 0200-01-.11 sets reciprocity at $100. Allow three to four weeks for processing.
- If you trained fewer than 1,500 hours, submit work history showing licensed practice for at least 1 of the last 3 years or 2 of the last 5 years. Tax returns listing your occupation or letters from employers on company letterhead qualify as proof.
- Do not work until the license is issued or verify.tn.gov shows it active.
