What ABS Actually Does

Under heavy braking a wheel can decelerate faster than the vehicle and lock. A locked wheel loses both stopping power and steering control. ABS monitors each wheel's speed and, when it detects a wheel about to lock, cycles hydraulic pressure to that wheel in three phases:

  1. Pressure hold - the isolation solenoid closes, so pressure at that wheel stops rising even though the driver is still pushing.

Testing a passive sensor

Why EBD matters. Before electronics, a mechanical proportioning valve limited rear brake pressure so the rear wheels did not lock before the front. The ABS bleeding procedure

Air trapped inside the hydraulic control unit cannot be removed by ordinary pedal bleeding, because the modulator chambers are isolated by closed solenoids. The standard method is:
