Because the two components can sit in separate Pearson windows (the 2027-campaign example placed Mechanical Reasoning in August–mid-September 2026 and Core Abilities from late September into October 2026), you do not get one shared clock across both batteries. Skip stuck items on purpose
The pack already told you it is not expected that every candidate answers every question correctly. That sentence is a pacing instruction as much as a scoring instruction. A three-gear train that will not resolve, or a long operational passage whose last line you cannot pin down, is a candidate for skip (or flag, if the software offers a flag). Staying on item 4 while the timer eats a large slice of the appointment is how people never reach later items they could have answered.
You cannot compute a "safe" official seconds-per-item figure from unpublished counts. You can notice whether the timer has moved a large fraction of the sitting while you are still on early items. That observation is enough to skip.
Review and re-attempt only if time and the function exist
Pearson OnVUE sittings often let candidates review earlier items and change an answer if time remains and if the review function exists in that assessment. Teach the rule as a conjunction, not as a promise:

A candidate opens Mechanical Reasoning, sees a pulley diagram, and traces ropes with a finger on the screen for several minutes. The timer is visible and has already dropped a noticeable chunk. The candidate remembers two facts that are published: the sitting is timed, and QFD does not expect every answer to be correct. The candidate skips, answers a simpler gear-direction item, and — if review exists and time remains — returns to the pulley. That sequence does not require knowing an unpublished item count. It requires refusing to treat one diagram as the whole appointment.
A second candidate treats Core Abilities literacy as "easy" and races, then meets a multi-step numeracy word problem with no calculator and no note paper. Guessing a tidy percentage because "I need 70" is not a QFD method. Estimating the operation, eliminating impossible magnitudes, and moving on is.

Pearson QFD Sample Demonstration and the OnVUE system check
Pearson provides a QFD Sample Demonstration. It emulates look and feel with limited examples. It is not the live scored Mechanical Reasoning paper, not the live scored Core Abilities paper, and not a leak of official item counts, domain weights, or a pass mark. Finishing the sample with a comfortable score is evidence that you can click the interface, not evidence that QFD will treat you as competitive.
Complete the Sample Demonstration and the OnVUE system check:
- Before sitting day, on the machine you intend to use.
- Again on the day, before the proctoring session starts, on that same machine and network.
The sample teaches where Next, flag, and review controls sit if those controls appear. The system check teaches whether the webcam, microphone, and browser will satisfy OnVUE.
