Method traps by family

Mechanical diagrams. The stem usually asks direction, which load moves, which side takes more force, which bulb is affected, or which object has more kinetic energy. The trap is decorating the figure. If two gears mesh, reverse; if a belt is simple and untwisted, keep direction. If the diagram does not give tooth counts, do not invent a ratio so you can feel quantitative. If a circuit shows an open switch, the trap is lighting a bulb that is not on that branch because the cartoon looks “powered.” Kinetic-energy items follow mass and speed in the stem, not how large the flames are drawn. When you need a second page of theory, you have left first-pass and should skip.

Literacy. Vocabulary, analogy, and syllogism items fail when firefighter flavour replaces the stated relation. “Hydrant is to water as nozzle is to …” is a relation question, not a chance to lecture on attack lines. Long passages fail when you pick the option a good crew would probably do. The testable move is must-be-true: if the passage never mentions a booster tank, an option about the booster tank is outside scope even if it is operationally tidy.

Numeracy and multi-step problems. The trap is mixing units (litres with millilitres, minutes with hours, concentrate with total mixture) or starting a written long division you cannot park on paper. Estimate magnitude first. If two operations are required, do the one the stem’s question actually asks last, so you do not stop at an intermediate crew-count that was only a stepping stone.

Analytical aptitude. Shape sequences, odd-one-out, matrices, and rotations fail when you stack features. If shading count already decides the next cell, do not also require a story about which icon “looks most like a pump.” Rotations fail when you mix a 2D turn with a 3D roll you were not shown. Odd-one-out fails when every option is “a bit different”; name the rule that isolates one figure.

Cross-family carry.
