10.3 After the Cognitive Test: Beep, OFAT, Interview, and Psych

Key Takeaways

  • On the live recruit page (last updated 19 August 2026) the ten-step order is application, Beep, online cognitive, OFAT, state panel interview, psychological assessment, criminal history and referees, state selection, medical, then pre-course tickets.
  • The May 2026 Calendar of Events for the 2027 campaign places applications in May–June 2026, Beep in July 2026, online assessments in August–October 2026, OFAT in November 2026, interviews in January 2027, psych in February 2027, final checks in March–April 2027, and recruit courses in 2027–2028; the calendar may change.
  • Beep is pass/fail at Level 9.6 with no merit and a pack second attempt only if the first run is at least Level 8.0; OFAT is pass/fail with no merit for speed, three named parts, Brisbane or Townsville, and a pack second attempt inside the assessment period.
  • The live recruit page warns that if you cannot attend or do not successfully complete an assessment you will not be provided a re-attempt and that dates are inflexible; do not assume a cognitive retake in the same campaign.
  • The state panel interview is a later merit stage (behavioural and scenario, CAR, Blue Card evidence, typically 30–45 minutes in the pack); this aptitude guide is not an SJT or interview course. Psych is Brisbane, online plus group plus one-to-one, with 12-month validity and possible 12-month preclusion.

After the cognitive test: the rest of the recruit path

Quick answer: On the live recruit page (last updated 19 August 2026) Beep is step 2 and online cognitive is step 3. If you are sitting Pearson, Beep is already done. Next among the remaining gates are OFAT, the state panel interview, and psychological assessment, then checks, state selection, a candidate-paid medical, and pre-course first aid, advanced resuscitation, and a manual medium rigid (MR) licence. Completing a stage does not guarantee a job.

This section sits in an aptitude guide because candidates lose campaigns by treating OnVUE as the whole job, or by treating later stages as if they were extra cognitive papers. It is not an SJT course, not an interview course, and not an OFAT training plan. It maps what QFD has published so you do not confuse a gear diagram with a beep shuttle, or a matrix with a merit interview.

Live order versus the 2027 calendar example

The May 2026 Calendar of Events for the 2027 Firefighter Recruitment Campaign (courses in 2027–2028) is a planning skeleton. It may change for operational reasons.

Pearson’s 9 September 2026 snapshot still fits inside that August–October online block for this campaign example: Mechanical Reasoning 20 August–14 September 2026 and Core Abilities 23 September–13 October 2026. Your invitation email controls the live window.

If you are reading this the night before OnVUE, do not reopen a Beep training plan instead of sleeping. Beep is already a completed gate in the live order. Keep the Beep facts in this chapter because the second-attempt rules and the recruit page’s no re-attempt warning are easy to mix up with cognitive sittings.

Beep Test (already behind you if you are on Pearson)

The Beep Test (shuttle run) is pass/fail with no merit. You must reach Level 9.6; the recruit page says you are not required to run beyond 9.6. You complete it at an identified venue. You visit your doctor for clearance at your expense before you run, and you pay attendance costs.

The 2024 pack still describes a second attempt only if the first attempt is at least Level 8.0, on another day inside that campaign’s Beep window. Below 8.0 on the first attempt, that pack second attempt is not available. That is a physical-test rule. It is not a template for Pearson.

OFAT after a successful cognitive phase

Applicants who successfully complete the online assessments may be invited to the Operational Focused Abilities Test (OFAT) in Brisbane or Townsville. You pay your own attendance costs. Every task is pass/fail. There is no merit for speed; finishing fastest is not extra standing.

The pack splits OFAT into three parts:

  1. Road Crash Rescue (RCR) equipment hold
  2. Six-station test
  3. Case 1 high-pressure (HP) hose reel drag

The pack permits a second attempt within the assessment period if the first OFAT is unsuccessful. Technique and warnings in QFD’s OFAT Guide still fail you even if you are fast. Independent QFD physical-training PDFs are for the physical test. They do not replace this cognitive guide, and this cognitive guide does not replace them.

Dual teaching on re-attempts and inflexible dates

Hold both of the following at once. They are not the same sentence.

  • Live recruit page (Important Information): if you are unable to attend or do not successfully complete an assessment, you will not be provided a re-attempt. There is no flexibility on assessment dates; Talent Acquisition cannot consider requests to move them. Successful completion of an assessment also does not guarantee progression; selection may occur at any stage.
  • 2024 pack, physical tests only: Beep may have a second attempt when the first run is at least Level 8.0; OFAT may have a second attempt inside the assessment period.

Do not assume a cognitive retake in the same campaign. There is no published in-campaign Pearson voucher for a missed or failed Mechanical Reasoning or Core Abilities sitting. Read the invitation. Do not skip a booked OnVUE slot because you wanted a later Saturday and hoped for a courtesy rebook.

Interview, psych, checks, medical, and pre-course

State panel interview (merit — not this test)

The interview is a later gate. Interview results contribute to merit standing. The recruit page tells you not to underestimate it, to dress and act professionally, and to bring evidence of a paid Blue Card from Blue Card Services. Interviews are held in multiple Queensland locations. You pay attendance costs.

The 2024 pack describes a typical 30–45 minute interview, with perusal time and personal notes allowed for perusal. Expect behavioural questions and scenario questions. The pack’s answer shape is CAR: Context (the situation), Action (what you did and why), Result (what happened), plus learnings if they fit. That is interview technique, not an OnVUE item type.

QFD’s shared values are respect, integrity, courage, loyalty, and trust. Use them when you prepare examples for the panel. Do not import them as a scoring key for Mechanical Reasoning or Core Abilities. This aptitude guide will not pretend to be an interview course, will not script CAR stories for you, and will not treat third-party SJT banks as a named Online Cognitive Ability component.

Psychological assessment (Brisbane)

Applicants recommended from interview complete psychological assessment in Brisbane only. The recruit page describes online assessments, a group assessment, and a one-to-one interview. QFD covers the assessment fees; you cover travel and accommodation.

Results are valid for 12 months. If you completed QFD firefighter psychological assessments within the last 12 months, you may not have to repeat them; QFD will advise. The pack states this phase is not described as a simple pass/fail tick, but QFD has minimum standards (a current profile) you must meet to progress. If you do not meet those requirements, you may be precluded from campaigns for the following 12 months because results remain valid for that year.

Criminal history, referees, and state selection

QFD covers criminal-history and referee-report costs and uses an online reference platform. Past offences are considered case by case and may or may not stop progression. State selection compares you on merit against the current pool. Completing every assessment does not guarantee a recruit firefighter job. The pool may be convened more than once; an offer is not automatic.

Medical and pre-course tickets

A full QFD medical sits after selection for placement on a recruit program. Candidates pay for the medical. Pre-course requirements include current first aid and advanced resuscitation, plus a current manual MR licence. The recruit page advises not to complete the first-aid tickets until QFD asks, because currency dates are specific; QFD says it will give enough time. You pay for those qualifications and the licence. Failure to meet offer conditions in the stated window can withdraw the offer.

What this aptitude guide will not become

  • It will not teach Beep running plans or OFAT station technique beyond the published pass/fail and retake facts above.
  • It will not turn QFD values into fake cognitive scoring keys.
  • It will not claim OpenExamPrep practice is an official QFD or Pearson product, or that it has official approval, partnership, or exact equivalence with the live batteries.
  • It will not invent a 70 percent cognitive cut, an official item count, or an in-campaign cognitive retake QFD has not published.

After-OnVUE list

  1. Confirm you submitted the battery you actually booked; Mechanical Reasoning and Core Abilities can be separate days.
  2. Do not expect a courtesy cognitive rebook if you missed the slot; the recruit page treats non-attendance and unsuccessful completion as no re-attempt, and dates as inflexible.
  3. If invited, treat OFAT as pass/fail technique in Brisbane or Townsville, not as a race; use QFD’s OFAT materials for the physical test.
  4. Park CAR examples and QFD values for the January interview window in the 2027 example, not for OnVUE review.
  5. Budget travel to Brisbane for psych if you progress; results can follow you for 12 months.
  6. Keep Blue Card, medical money, first-aid timing, and manual MR on a separate checklist from cognitive practice.
  7. Remember state selection is merit against the current pool: finishing the list is not a job contract.

Independent OpenExamPrep practice remains independent study material for Mechanical Reasoning and Core Abilities topics. Later stages have their own QFD guides, forms, and invitation emails. Those emails, not this chapter, control your live dates.
