The organizing theory behind all of these is Jim Cummins' claim that a bilingual has one mind, not two — and that claim generates the single most frequently tested piece of parent advice on the exam.

In the ESOL classroom this is a legitimate, research-supported scaffold, not a concession.

The correct answer is always no, and CUP supplies the reason. Recommend that families continue using and developing the home language, because:

  • Concepts and literacy strategies built in the L1 transfer to English through the common underlying proficiency.
  • Parents can provide rich, complex, emotionally connected input in their strongest language; broken English supplies impoverished input in both directions.
  • Abandoning the home language produces subtractive bilingualism, family communication loss, and identity cost — with no compensating gain in English.
  • Home-language reading, storytelling, and conversation build the very academic language base that English literacy will draw on.
