Why Fallacies Matter for USTET English
Beyond grammar and reading comprehension, UST's Grade 11–aligned English expectations include critical language: judging whether an argument is sound. A logical fallacy is a recurring defect in reasoning. The conclusion might accidentally be true, but the path to that conclusion does not justify belief.
Entrance-exam items typically present a short argument (a claim plus a reason) and ask which fallacy it commits, or which reply best exposes the flaw. You do not need formal symbolic logic—only pattern recognition.
Valid concern vs. fallacy. Criticizing a source's conflict of interest can be fair. Attacking a classmate's accent while ignoring their evidence is ad hominem. The difference is whether the attack targets the argument's merits or something irrelevant about the person.

Ad Hominem: Attack the Person
Ad hominem (Latin: "to the person") rejects a claim by attacking the speaker's character, background, appearance, or alleged motive instead of addressing evidence.

- "That article on study schedules is worthless; the author isn't even a Tomasian."
A past failure or school affiliation does not automatically refute a claim about sleep science or scheduling. Ask: If a different person said the same words with the same evidence, would the attack still "work"? If yes, the attack is irrelevant—classic ad hominem.
Related but distinct: Pointing out that a speaker profits from a product can be a legitimate bias check if tied to the claim. Pure name-calling without linking to evidence remains fallacious.
Straw Man: Beat a Fake Version of the Argument
A straw man replaces someone's real position with a weaker, distorted version, then knocks that version down.
Real claim: "USTET applicants should practice timed Mental Ability sets." Straw version: "So you're saying students should abandon all Science review and only do puzzles."
The distorted version is easier to attack but is not what was argued. Exam cues include words like so you think, in other words, or extreme restatements (always, never, abandon, ban) that the original speaker did not use.
How to answer straw-man items: Compare the original claim (if given) with the rebuttal. If the rebuttal fights an exaggerated twin, choose straw man.
False Dilemma (False Dichotomy): Fake Either/Or
A false dilemma forces a choice between two options when other reasonable options exist.
- "Either you enroll in a costly review center or you have no chance at UST."
- "You're either with our org 100% or you don't care about the college."
Hidden third options might include free OpenExamPrep practice, school-based reviews, partial org involvement, or a balanced study plan. The fallacy is not using "either/or" in logic puzzles where only two options truly exist; it is artificially narrowing the field to pressure agreement.
Cue phrases: only two choices, you're either X or Y, no middle ground—especially in advice or persuasion passages.
Hasty Generalization: Jumping from Thin Evidence
Hasty generalization draws a broad conclusion from a sample that is too small, biased, or unrepresentative.
- "I asked three friends; all hated the Math subtest. Therefore every USTET taker fails Math."
- "One online post said the fee waiver is automatic. So waivers never need documents."
Anecdotes can illustrate, but they do not prove universals. Watch absolute words—all, none, always, never, every—glued to tiny evidence.
Contrast with careful induction: "In a surveyed sample of 500 recent takers, 70% found Mental Ability hardest" is stronger (still not perfect, but not hasty in the same way). USTET items usually make the sample obviously tiny.
Appeal to Emotion: Feelings as Fake Proof
Appeal to emotion (including fear, pity, flattery, or guilt) tries to win assent by stirring feeling rather than supplying relevant reasons.
- Pity: "Accept my late application—my story would make you cry." (Sadness may deserve compassion in life, but it does not prove eligibility rules are met.)
- Fear: "If you don't buy this package tonight, your future is ruined."
- Flattery: "Smart students like you obviously agree with this claim."
Emotion can accompany a good argument; the fallacy occurs when emotion replaces evidence. On the exam, prefer the option that names emotion-for-proof when the passage leans on tears, terror, or pride without data or logic.
Circular Reasoning (Begging the Question)
Circular reasoning assumes the conclusion inside the premises. The argument goes in a loop instead of offering independent support.
- "This practice test is reliable because it is a trustworthy practice test."
- "He is the best coach because no one coaches better than he does."
Both sides of "because" say the same thing in different words. No new reason appears.
Detection tip: Cross out synonyms in the premise and conclusion. If nothing informative remains, the reasoning is circular.
Note: In philosophy, "begging the question" means this circularity—not "raising a question," which is a common informal misuse of the phrase.
Strategy for Fallacy Identification Items
- Locate the conclusion — what does the speaker want you to accept?
- Locate the reason — what support is offered?
- Match the gap — personal attack? distorted opponent? fake either/or? tiny sample? emotion only? loop?
- Ignore truth of the conclusion — a true conclusion can still rest on a fallacy.
- Eliminate look-alikes — ad hominem insults a person; straw man twists a position; circular repeats the claim.
Fallacy skills also transfer to reading comprehension: when a passage argues poorly, inference and author's-purpose items become easier because you see the persuasive technique at work.
