Pre-Exhaust Versus Priority Training
Pre-exhaust is isolation of a muscle before the compound lift that also uses it — leg extensions before squats, chest flyes before bench press. The isolation fatigues the target muscle so the compound lift feels it more, often at a lower external load. That can be a hypertrophy tool or a way to limit spinal or joint load. It is not the default for strength or power, because the squat or bench then happens in a pre-fatigued state, so bar speed and technique suffer.
