The drawing is only half the deliverable. The other half is the list of physical parts that turns the drawing into a system. NICET assigns this to Level II — blueprint task 2.5.8, "Prepare material and fabrication stocklists" — because it is the point where a layout technician's drafting accuracy becomes somebody else's material cost.

Never fabricate from an unapproved drawing. Every revision the AHJ imposes changes lengths, and pipe cut to a superseded drawing is scrap.


Cut Length vs. Center-to-Center

This is the arithmetic that separates a stocklist from a takeoff. Your drawing dimensions are center-to-center between fittings. The shop needs cut length, which is the center-to-center dimension minus the take-out of the fitting at each end.

  Threaded fitting: take-out = center of fitting to end of pipe,
                    LESS the thread engagement.
  Grooved coupling: allow the gap specified by the coupling manufacturer.
  Welded outlet:    no take-out on the run, but the outlet location must be
                    dimensioned from a datum, not chained from the last fitting.

Two habits prevent most field problems. Dimension from a datum, not in a chain, so one error does not propagate down an entire main. And do not mix nominal and actual dimensions: pipe is ordered by nominal size, but the inside diameter used in your hydraulic calculation and the take-out used in your cut list are actual dimensions.

Steel sprinkler pipe is supplied in nominal 21 ft lengths. A stocklist should therefore report both the total footage by size and the number of stock lengths required after a waste allowance — otherwise the purchasing agent has to do that conversion and will do it differently than you assumed.


The Category Checklist That Prevents Short Orders

Missing categories, not miscounted mains, are what wreck a takeoff.

  • Pipe — by size, schedule/wall, material, and end preparation (threaded, roll-grooved, cut-grooved, plain end for welding).
  • Fittings — elbows, tees, crosses, reducers, caps, and the couplings, which are usually the largest single fitting count on a grooved job.
  • Sprinklers — by K-factor, temperature rating, response type, orientation (upright, pendent, sidewall, concealed, dry pendent), and finish. Finish is a schedule item: white polyester heads on a six-week lead time will stop a ceiling.
  • Escutcheons and cover plates — matched to sprinkler and finish; frequently forgotten and always visible.
  • Drops, armovers, sprigs, return bends — the small pipe that connects the branch line to the sprinkler. This is the most commonly under-counted footage on any job.
  • Hangers and supports — hanger type, rod diameter and length, upper attachments, and the anchors or inserts they land on. Remember that the assembly must support five times the water-filled pipe weight plus a 250 lb point load, so the hardware is sized, not generic.
  • Seismic bracing — braces, brace pipe or strut, fasteners, flexible couplings, and clearance sleeves where required.
  • Valves and trim — control valves, check valves, drains, test connections, gauges, air vents, and the tamper switches that go with them.
  • Signage and identification — hydraulic design information sign, control valve identification, FDC signage, and system riser labeling.
  • Spare sprinkler cabinet contents — spares of each type and temperature rating in the system, plus a wrench for each type (quantities per Section 12.4).

Piece Marks, Spools, and Getting Material to the Work

A piece mark is the unique label the shop stencils or tags on a fabricated spool, matching a mark on the fabrication drawing. Without it, an installer holding four similar 6 in. spools has to measure each one. With it, the crew reads a tag.

Spool size is governed less by fabrication than by access:

  • Will the spool fit through the door, corridor, and around the corner it must turn?
  • Will it fit in the elevator car, and does the car's rated load allow it?
  • Can it be delivered on a standard truck, or does it need a permit load?
  • Is there crane or lift time available on the day it lands, or must it be man-handled?

Answer those before deciding where the shop weld ends and the field joint begins. A perfectly fabricated 22 ft spool that cannot turn the corner into the mechanical room is a total loss.

Coordination with the field

Bundle and stage material by area and by installation sequence, not by size. A crew that receives all the 2 in. pipe for the whole building at once will store it, restack it, and lose it. A crew that receives Level 3 East as one tagged bundle installs it. This is a layout-office decision made when the stocklist is organized, and it is the difference between a takeoff that is merely accurate and one that is useful.
