7.4 Nitrogen Generation Systems & Gas Separation Membranes

Key Takeaways

  • Nitrogen reduces oxygen exposure but does not guarantee zero corrosion, a particular dew point, or a fixed service life.

  • For increased-C-value systems, verify at least 98% concentration semiannually, with the stated annual constantly supervised-monitoring exception.

  • Generator inspection, operational testing, concentration verification, and manufacturer maintenance are distinct duties.

  • Loss of the design-required C=120 nitrogen supply invokes the Chapter 14 provision with its stated exception.

Nitrogen reduces one contributor to corrosion

Dry and preaction piping can retain moisture after operation or condensation. Oxygen exposure in those conditions can contribute to corrosion and obstruction. Nitrogen supply can reduce oxygen exposure under an appropriate design, while drainage, leak correction, assessment, and maintenance remain necessary. Do not promise zero corrosion, immunity to MIC, a fixed pipe life, or freedom from ice from one purity reading.

Identify the generator, compressor/source, tanks, filtration, purge arrangement, analyzer, sample points, and systems served. Record whether the approved design relies on nitrogen to permit an increased Hazen-Williams C value. That design dependency changes the significance of supply and concentration findings. An inspector must not assume that fitting a generator automatically permits smaller pipe or a different hydraulic calculation.

Understand separation at a useful level

A membrane generator uses different gas permeation rates to produce nitrogen-enriched output from compressed air. Appropriate filtration and moisture control protect the separation equipment. The Potter INS-1000 description illustrates membrane separation followed by gas delivery and system purging. It is one product example, not a universal filter train or valve layout.

Other equipment can use pressure-swing adsorption, cycling between adsorption and regeneration conditions. The actual equipment determines pressures, valves, capacity, maintenance, and analyzer requirements. Do not memorize an unsupported universal dew point, filter micron size, oil concentration, or ten-year module life as an NFPA rule. Use the installed manufacturer's current instructions and service information.

Concentration requirements for increased-C-value systems

NFPA 25 (2023), 13.4.5.2.10 for dry systems and 13.4.3.2.14 for preaction, requires semiannual testing to verify at least 98% nitrogen where nitrogen permits the increased design C value under NFPA 13. Where concentration is monitored at a constantly supervised location, the stated annual verification exception applies. Below 98%, identify and correct the cause under the applicable provision.

Verify through the specified system sampling arrangement and suitable instrument. An outlet display at the generator does not establish the concentration in every connected remote pipe. Purging, leakage, valve positions, and sample method can affect readings. Identify system, sample point, instrument, date, operating condition, measured concentration, and follow-up. Do not choose only the most favorable point and report it as an unqualified result for all risers.

Inspection and operational testing

Section 13.10 requires monthly inspection of dedicated compressors/generators for physical damage, wiring and supply-piping condition, secure attachment, and oil level where applicable. Operational testing is annual for the prescribed response and restoration of normal supervisory pressure within the required time. These duties are separate from concentration verification. A cabinet passing its annual start test does not establish that a remote system has reached the required purity.

Maintenance and calibration follow the actual manufacturer instructions and applicable provisions. Check filters, drains, purge devices, analyzer condition, and alarms through the defined method. There is no universal annual replacement of every filter in every design. A blocked filter or incorrect purge arrangement can affect capacity or purity; diagnose before replacing unrelated parts or raising pressure.

Loss of a design-required supply

Chapter 14 includes failure to maintain the nitrogen supply installed for a dry/preaction C=120 design as an investigation trigger, with the stated preplanned-impairment exception. Apply that provision rather than inventing a universal grace period or assuming ordinary compressed air is always an acceptable permanent substitute. Coordinate the protection status, required investigation, correction, and restoration with the owner.

A generator shutdown can have several effects: reduced gas replenishment, declining concentration over time, or loss of an approved design assumption. Establish the actual arrangement and elapsed condition from records. An inspector should not conclude from the stopped cabinet alone that every sprinkler is immediately blocked, nor ignore the design-dependent trigger because the riser still shows pressure.

Work safely and preserve evidence

Nitrogen can displace oxygen in enclosed rooms, pits, and tanks. Arrange appropriate ventilation and atmospheric controls; never use nitrogen as breathing air. Equipment also has electrical and stored-pressure hazards. Isolate safely before internal maintenance and preserve fire protection through the impairment process when necessary.

After correction, verify required concentration and operation through the prescribed methods, normal valves and purge arrangement, supervisory pressure, alarms, and final status. Keep results and service records available for the next comparison. A defensible report states what was tested and restored rather than promising that nitrogen has eliminated every future corrosion or ice problem.
