Why scheme logistics matter before you open a thruster diagram

Dynamic Positioning (DP) is the automatic control of a vessel’s position and heading by thrusters, sensors, and a computer model. The global credential most operators carry is the Nautical Institute (NI) DP Operator (DPO) Certificate. Before you study Kalman filters or Class 2 redundancy, you must understand who certifies you, how assessment is structured, and what clocks and fees govern the pathway. Wrong assumptions here waste months of sea time and course money.

NI certifies people; IMCA does not

The Nautical Institute (NI) in London runs the dominant offshore DPO scheme, issues the logbook, accredits training centres, and awards Limited, Unlimited, and related certificates through the NI Alexis Platform. IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association) publishes widely used operational guidance (for example M103 and M117) that vessels and clients reference, but IMCA does not issue individual DPO certificates. On exam-style and interview questions, treat “IMCA DPO” as a category error: IMCA guidance informs how you operate; NI rules decide whether you are certified.

Not one fixed exam — a multi-phase scheme

Unlike a single securities or licensing paper, the NI offshore DPO route is a five-phase scheme (A–E):

• Phase A — DP Induction Course ending in an online invigilated multiple-choice assessment
• Phase B — documented DP sea time and tasks
• Phase C — DP Simulator Course with a practical assessment
• Phase D — further DP sea time
• Phase E — Master’s Statement of Suitability and certificate application

There is no single published “100-question DPO exam” with one global sitting date. Knowledge is tested most formally at Phase A (MCQ) and Phase C (simulator); sea-time phases prove experience under company confirmation. Official sources do not publish a scheme-wide pass rate for all phases, so do not invent one for study notes or interviews.

Phase A logistics (the Induction assessment)

The Phase A online assessment is the closest thing to a “written exam” most candidates face:

Treat ~40 and ~1h15m as scheme-typical figures used in NI-facing descriptions; exact delivery is controlled by the accredited centre and NI assessment platform. Candidates who fail the first attempt usually receive limited further attempts within set time windows — confirm the current attempt rules with your centre before the course week, because attempt clocks are short relative to sea-time phases.

Phase C logistics (the Simulator assessment)

Phase C is not another long MCQ paper. The DP Simulator Course builds operator skill on a full-mission or desktop DP simulator and ends in a practical assessment: setup, watchkeeping, reference selection, power and thruster failures, and recovery judgment under instructor observation. You can pass Phase A with strong theory and still fail Phase C if you cannot run checklists, interpret consequence analysis, or manage a degraded plant calmly. Course length, accreditation, and fees

Never treat a single quote as universal. Centres in different countries price differently; some packages bundle exam fees and materials, others itemise them. Always verify current fees and dates on the centre’s listing and the NI Alexis Platform accreditation list before booking.

Two five-year clocks you must track

1. Scheme completion clock: scheme elements must be completed within five years (as defined in the current NI Certification & Accreditation Standard). Letting Phase A expire unused while you chase sea time can force a restart of coursework or invalidation of intermediate steps.
2. Certificate revalidation clock: once issued, the DPO certificate is valid for five years and must be revalidated (sea-time/CPD routes or refresher paths — covered in Section 1.3). Operating past expiry without a valid certificate is a compliance failure for you and the vessel.

Exam-style traps in “facts” questions

Worked orientation scenario

A third officer books a non-accredited “DP intro” webinar and assumes that finishes certification. Even if the webinar is excellent teaching, it does not satisfy Phase A. Only an NI-accredited Induction Course plus the online invigilated assessment counts, then sea time, Simulator, more sea time, and Phase E. The first career decision is therefore centre accreditation and Alexis Platform enrolment, not bargain price alone.

Bottom line: learn the NI-owned, multi-phase structure, lock the Phase A numbers (~40 MCQs, ~1h15m, 70%), budget course days and variable fees, and protect both five-year clocks while using free practice to carry knowledge between phases.
