DPO Certificate Revalidation

The Nautical Institute

The Nautical Institute DPO Certificate is the leading worldwide credential for dynamic positioning operators, earned through the NI five-phase scheme (A-E), not a single exam. Phase A is the DP Induction Course, ending in an online invigilated assessment of about 40 MCQs in roughly 1h15m with a 70% pass mark; Phase C is the Simulator Course with a practical assessment; Phases B and D are DP sea time (60+ DP days) and Phase E is the Master's Statement of Suitability. Knowledge spans DP principles (surge/sway/yaw, the controller, Kalman filter, gyro/wind/MRU sensors, UPS), position references (DGNSS, HPR/USBL/LBL, taut wire, Fanbeam/CyScan laser, RadaScan), power generation and redundancy (PMS, load sharing/shedding, open vs closed bus, blackout recovery), thrusters and control modes, IMO equipment Classes 1/2/3 with FMEA, worst case failure and consequence analysis, and operations (ASOG, CAM/TAM, capability/footprint plots, watchkeeping, 500 m zone). Certificates are Limited or Unlimited by sea time and revalidate every five years.

1Which organisation administers the dominant global certification scheme for individual Dynamic Positioning Operators (DPOs)?
A.The Nautical Institute (NI)
B.The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA)
C.The International Maritime Organization (IMO)
D.The Dynamic Positioning Vessel Owners Association (DPVOA)
Explanation: The Nautical Institute (NI) in London administers the DP Operator certification scheme and issues the DPO logbook and certificate. IMCA publishes guidance (M103, M117) but does not certify individual DPOs.
2Under the Nautical Institute DP scheme, in which phase does the trainee complete the DP Induction Course and its online invigilated assessment?
A.Phase C
B.Phase A
C.Phase D
D.Phase E
Explanation: Phase A is the DP Induction Course, which ends with an online invigilated multiple-choice assessment. Phase C is the Simulator Course, and Phases B and D are the DP sea-time periods.
3The DP Induction Course online assessment under the NI scheme consists of approximately 40 multiple-choice questions. What is the pass mark?
A.50%
B.60%
C.70%
D.80%
Explanation: The NI DP Induction assessment is around 40 MCQs to be completed in about 1 hour 15 minutes with a 70% pass mark.
4What is the primary purpose of a Dynamic Positioning (DP) system on a vessel?
A.To moor the vessel to the seabed using anchors
B.To stabilise the vessel against roll using fin stabilisers
C.To provide propulsion only for transit between ports
D.To automatically maintain the vessel's position and heading using its own thrusters and propellers
Explanation: A DP system automatically maintains a vessel's position and heading exclusively by means of active thrust from its thrusters and propellers, without anchors or mooring lines.
5A DP control system continuously controls the vessel in which three degrees of freedom?
A.Surge, sway and yaw
B.Heave, roll and pitch
C.Surge, heave and roll
D.Sway, pitch and yaw
Explanation: DP actively controls the three horizontal-plane degrees of freedom: surge (fore/aft), sway (athwartships) and yaw (heading). Heave, roll and pitch are measured by the MRU but are not directly controlled by thrust.
6Which mathematical technique does the DP controller use to combine the mathematical vessel model with position-reference and sensor measurements to produce a best estimate of position?
A.Fast Fourier Transform
B.Kalman filtering
C.Linear regression
D.Proportional-only feedback
Explanation: The DP controller uses a Kalman filter to blend the predicted position from the mathematical model with noisy reference-system and sensor inputs, rejecting wild points and providing dead-reckoning if references are lost.
7Which sensor provides the DP system with the vessel's heading?
A.Motion Reference Unit (MRU)
B.Wind sensor
C.Gyrocompass
D.Vertical Reference Unit barometer
Explanation: The gyrocompass supplies heading (and rate of turn) to the DP system. A DP Class 2/3 vessel carries multiple gyros so heading data remains available after a single failure.
8What is the main function of the wind sensor input to a DP system?
A.To measure the vessel's position relative to a fixed structure
B.To determine the vessel's heading
C.To calculate the depth of water under the keel
D.To provide feed-forward compensation so thrust counters wind before the vessel is pushed off position
Explanation: Wind is the only major environmental force that can be measured directly, so the DP system uses it as a feed-forward term to apply corrective thrust before position error develops, improving station-keeping.
9Why does the DP system require a Motion Reference Unit (MRU) when using position-reference systems?
A.To correct reference-sensor positions for the vessel's roll, pitch and heave
B.To provide the vessel's heading to the controller
C.To measure wind speed at the masthead
D.To act as the main power-management computer
Explanation: The MRU measures roll, pitch and heave so the DP system can correct the geometry of antenna/transducer positions; without this correction, vessel motion would introduce false position errors.
10On a DP vessel, what is the purpose of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) serving the DP control system?
A.To provide main propulsion thrust during a blackout
B.To maintain power to DP computers, reference systems and sensors during a power interruption so control is not lost
C.To increase the vessel's generating capacity for heavy lifts
D.To charge the emergency towing battery
Explanation: UPS units supply continuous, clean power to the DP computers, reference systems and sensors so that a momentary loss or disturbance of main power does not cause loss of DP control. Class requirements specify minimum UPS endurance.
