About the NCPCT Exam
The National Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) credential from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) shows employers that you can safely combine the three skill sets hospitals expect of a patient care technician: basic nursing-assistant care, phlebotomy, and electrocardiography (ECG). This guide follows NCCT's NCPCT Detailed Test Plan (effective January 2025) task by task. The test plan also lists an essential knowledge base that runs through every category: infection control, patient safety, patient assessment, activities of daily living, patient education, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, first aid, blood and non-blood collection, specimen handling, ECG procedures, rhythm recognition, artifacts and recording errors, equipment maintenance and operation, and HIPAA. Expect blended questions. A phlebotomy item may really be testing patient identification; an ECG item may really be testing patient education.
How Scoring Works
NCCT uses a criterion-referenced standard. A panel of subject-matter experts rates each item's difficulty, psychometricians turn those ratings into a recommended passing point, and NCCT's Board of Testing approves it. You are measured against that standard, not against other candidates, so there is no curve. Because exam forms differ slightly in difficulty, raw scores are converted to a 200–720 scale, and the passing point is always 575. A higher passing score does not earn a different credential. If you do not pass, the score report shows your percentage correct in each content area; use it to decide which chapters to review first.
Fees, Scheduling, and Testing Rules
- Exam fee: $119 for the NCPCT (the same fee NCCT lists for its NCMA, NCPT, NCET, and other core exams).
- Live remote proctoring: an extra $44. You need a laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone, a second device for the 360-degree camera, at least a 3 Mbps connection, a clear desk and chair, and no breaks once the exam starts.
- Rescheduling: $25; request it at least 14 days before a test-site appointment. A remote exam rescheduled less than 5 days out costs the $25 fee plus the $44 remote fee again.
- Applications: must reach NCCT at least 14 days before the requested date and stay valid for one year. If you withdraw within 3 business days, or NCCT finds you ineligible, the fee is refunded minus a $39 administrative fee.
- Identification: a valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches the test roster.
Eligibility Pathways
The candidate handbook lists these routes for the NCPCT. All work experience must be gained in the United States or its territories.
- High School Pathway: a current student or graduate (within 5 years) of an NCCT-authorized high school patient care technician program. Current high school students who pass receive provisional certification until their documents arrive.
- Current Student Pathway: enrolled in an NCCT-authorized postsecondary PCT program, including U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeships. Graduation documents are due within 2 years of program completion.
- Graduate Pathway: graduated from an NCCT-authorized PCT program within the past 5 years.
- Experience Pathway: one year of verifiable full-time PCT work (2,080 hours) within the past 5 years under the supervision of a licensed physician or primary care provider, documented on NCCT's Qualification by Experience form, plus a high school diploma or GED.
- Military Pathway: PCT training completed during U.S. military service within the past 5 years, shown on a SMART transcript or DD214.

Keeping the Credential
An NCCT certification is active for one year at a time and valid for five years. To keep it active, NCPCT holders complete 12 contact hours of continuing education each year and pay the annual recertification fee ($89 for a single credential in NCCT's current recertification guide). Certificants also agree to follow NCCT's Code of Ethics, and violations can lead to Board of Testing sanctions up to revocation. A missed renewal makes the credential inactive; missing it for five consecutive years makes it invalid, which means taking the exam again.
A Study Plan That Mirrors the Test Plan
- Weight your time by items. Patient Intake and Care alone is 38 scored items, more than ECG and Law and Ethics combined. Do not spend half your study time on rhythm strips.
- Learn the reason behind every number. Order of draw, tourniquet time, cuff size, and electrode landmarks are tested through scenarios, not by recall alone.
- Practice the PCT boundary. Many items ask what the PCT should do first or what falls outside the PCT role. The answer is usually to protect the patient, then report to the nurse.
- Check your readiness. Work through the free NCPCT practice questions by content area and revisit any chapter where you score below about 80%.
