2.2 Load Weight, Density and Complete Inventories
Key Takeaways
For uniform material, multiply volume by the appropriate given weight density.
For a hollow cylinder, subtract inner-cylinder volume from outer-cylinder volume.
An inclined-sling load cell reads tension, not just the vertical share.
Determine a defensible load weight
Load weight is the gravitational demand from the object being moved. Suspended system weight additionally includes slings, hardware, lifting devices and other items carried by the lifting equipment. Determine each inventory separately so the correct quantity reaches the correct calculation. Payload weight may control a beam’s rated load, while payload plus beam and rigging controls the crane’s suspended load.
Reliable information may come from manufacturer data, recognized calculations, shipping records, measurement or controlled weighing. OSHA’s crane operating provisions require determining that the load is within rated capacity and address recognized weight sources or methods. An estimate based on verified dimensions and appropriate material density is different from an unsupported guess. The quality of the inputs determines the quality of the estimate.
Ask whether a stated weight is dry, operating, shipping or installed weight. A shipping weight may include a pallet that will be removed. A dry vessel weight may exclude retained fluid. A motor drawing may omit a gearbox. Reconcile the record with what will be suspended, then account for uncertainties through an approved planning process.
Calculate volume before weight
For an object of uniform material density, weight is volume multiplied by the specified weight density. Use a density appropriate to the actual material and condition. Values in this lesson are given training inputs, not a material-identification method or permission to overlook internal contents.
| Shape | Volume method | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular solid | Length × width × thickness | Use consistent length units |
| Solid cylinder | π × radius squared × length | Radius is half the diameter |
| Hollow cylinder | Outer-cylinder volume minus inner-cylinder volume | Use inner diameter, not wall thickness as a radius |
| Composite assembly | Sum each component’s weight | Avoid counting overlapping or removed pieces twice |
For a plate 8 ft long, 4 ft wide and 1 inch thick, volume is 2.6667 cubic feet. With a supplied density of 490 lb per cubic foot, estimated plate weight is 2.6667 × 490 = 1,306.7 lb. Add actual attached hardware and any remaining components to obtain the assembly weight. Round the calculated result appropriately for the quality of the measurements; a tenth of a pound does not make an approximate density exact.
Hollow-pipe example
A pipe has a 12-inch outside diameter, a 10-inch inside diameter and a 20-ft length. Convert diameters to feet: 1 ft and 0.83333 ft. The annular cross-sectional area is π/4 × (1² − 0.83333²), approximately 0.239983 square feet. Volume is approximately 4.79966 cubic feet. Using a supplied density of 490 lb per cubic foot gives 2,351.8 lb.
Two common errors would be using a solid-cylinder volume, which includes the empty bore, or subtracting the diameters before squaring them. The area of the annulus is a difference of squared diameters. It is not the area of a solid cylinder whose diameter equals the wall’s combined thickness.
Add contents and accessories
Retained liquids, insulation, refractory, wiring, internal shafts, attached piping and shipping bracing can all change the lifted weight. Confirm contents through process isolation and the responsible owner. A tank that has been drained may still contain sludge. Opening equipment or releasing trapped material also introduces separate hazards that must be controlled before lifting.
A training inventory might contain a 12,000-lb machine, a 1,800-lb skid, 600 lb of retained contents and 400 lb of attached parts. Payload weight is 14,800 lb. If a lifting beam weighs 900 lb and lower rigging weighs 300 lb, the load beneath the upper connection is 16,000 lb. Additional upper rigging and the relevant crane block or load-line accounting must still be addressed according to the crane chart. The same item must not be added twice under different labels.
Recognize what a weighing result means
A load cell measures force in its particular connection. If installed in an inclined sling, it reads leg tension rather than the vertical load share. A crane display may estimate suspended load according to its system configuration. Neither measurement should be accepted without considering calibration, installed position, resolution and the manufacturer’s instructions.
If a load rests partly on the ground, the lifting equipment does not yet carry its entire weight. A partial pick reading cannot be used as total weight unless the method explicitly accounts for the remaining support reaction. Likewise, friction or a stuck connection can make the measured hoisting force exceed ordinary weight. Stop and resolve an unexpected force rather than pulling harder until the object breaks free.
Planning consequence
Suppose the verified payload is 14,800 lb, but the crew originally selected slings for the 12,000-lb bare machine. The correct response is to recalculate forces and component suitability for the complete payload. Choosing a stronger crane alone does not cure undersized lower rigging. Weight information must flow through every relevant connection, lifting device and destination support.
