1.3 Study Method, References and Recertification
Key Takeaways
Use supplied factors or length-to-height ratios when practicing with a basic calculator.
The Level II recertification written examination has 50 questions and a 60-minute limit.
Timely Rigger recertification has no practical-examination requirement.
There is no certification grace period after expiry.
Study decisions rather than isolated numbers
A productive preparation program asks three questions about each rigging arrangement: What force is present? What capacity applies? What could change during movement? These questions connect the written examination’s equipment selection, technical knowledge and execution domains. A large sling may still be unsuitable if its eye cannot seat correctly in the chosen hook. A correctly calculated starting force may still be insufficient for a rotation that changes the support geometry.
Use this guide as independent preparation, with the official candidate handbook and reference list as the controlling exam information. CCO’s study-materials page identifies its Rigger Reference Manual and Reference Booklet, plus ASME B30.9 and B30.26 and other listed publications. The publicly linked manual contains selected ASME excerpts and OSHA material; it is not the entire current edition of every standard.
The January 2025 handbook lists specific reference editions, including ASME B30.9-2021 and B30.26-2015. The linked Rigger Reference Manual is revised June 2019 and includes selected B30.5-2018, B30.10-2014 and B30.20-2018 material. Distinguish an exam reference edition from current workplace obligations. A newer catalog or standard should not silently replace the edition identified in the exam reference list, while actual field use must satisfy applicable law and current instructions for the installed equipment.
Build an error notebook
For every missed practice problem, record the failed decision before recording the answer. Useful categories include wrong datum, wrong angle reference, omitted rigging weight, incorrect hitch column, incompatible hardware and unsupported assumptions. This identifies a repeatable cause that another random question set may conceal.
| Error | Diagnostic question | Corrective practice |
|---|---|---|
| Angle factor inverted | Does a flatter sling increase or decrease tension? | Recalculate 60, 45 and 30 degrees |
| Off-center load divided equally | Where is the center of gravity between the picks? | Take moments about one support |
| Catalog rating misapplied | Which material, hitch and angle does the column describe? | Trace one complete table lookup |
| Hardware counted twice | Is this a physical suspended weight or a chart adjustment? | Make separate capacity and force inventories |
| Inspection threshold guessed | Which component and governing criterion apply? | Read the exact removal rule and baseline dimension |
Practice with a four-function calculator and supplied factors, because the official on-screen calculator is basic. If a problem provides a sling length and vertical height, the ratio of length to height may avoid a trigonometric function. If it supplies angle factors, use the given factor and its rounding convention. Do not invent a calculator feature or assume a personal device will be admitted.
Use a realistic study allocation
A proposed study schedule of four to eight weeks is a planning suggestion, not a CCO eligibility rule or a prediction of passing. Experienced candidates may need more time for unfamiliar equipment families; new candidates also need supervised hands-on instruction. Reading a text cannot establish that someone can safely rig an actual load.
Start with load identification, dimensions and center of gravity. Next, work through force calculations and component selection together: calculate the demand, then find the applicable working load limit. Follow with inspection and execution scenarios. Finish with mixed 50-question, 60-minute practice sets, leaving time to review every mistake against a source rather than retaining the practice key automatically.
Training questions can contain errors. If a question asserts that OSHA makes every 75%-capacity lift “critical,” seek the actual regulation and the site’s lift policy. The written outline does not turn every popular training rule into a universal requirement. In this guide, numerical examples give their assumptions explicitly so a learner can reproduce and test the reasoning.
Recertification is a separate calendar task
CCO Rigger certification is generally valid for five years. For timely recertification, the handbook requires compliance with substance-abuse and ethics policies and a passed written examination. Rigger recertification does not require a practical examination, and the handbook does not impose a 1,000-hour practical-waiver condition for this program.
The Level II recertification written examination is the same 50-question, 60-minute examination as the initial Level II written examination. Its outline also includes Level I inspection and execution content. Do not prepare only advanced mathematics while ignoring basic sling condition, safe connections and load handling.
Candidates may test during the final 12 months of the certification period. The handbook states there is no grace period after expiration. If certification lapses, full certification testing is required. A Level II candidate who fails the recertification exam twice must take and pass both Level I and Level II written examinations to recertify, as described in the handbook. This program-specific condition deserves attention before repeated attempts are booked.
Adding a designation
Adding Level II to an existing certification generally shares the existing expiration date rather than automatically starting a new five-year period. The handbook describes an exception for a designation added during the final 24 months. Read the current rule with the actual record before assuming an added credential grants five more years. The certificate or myCCO record establishes the operative expiration date.
A practical calendar example is a rigger whose certification expires next October. The final 12-month testing window opens the preceding October. Booking early leaves time for a failed written attempt, the required written retest wait and another available appointment. Waiting until the final week can leave no feasible retest before expiry even though the candidate began studying months earlier.

A currently certified Level II rigger is recertifying before expiry. What practical-examination condition does the handbook impose?
A practical is waived only after 1,000 logged hours
A new frame-rotation test is always required
No practical examination is required for timely Rigger recertification
Only the level-lift task must be repeated
