Headmaster publishes the exact item count for each of the twelve subject areas in the MSDH-approved Mississippi test plan. These are fixed counts, not estimated ranges — the twelve numbers add to exactly 70.

Headmaster also publishes a one-line definition of each subject area. Read them literally — they explain why an item you expect to be "Personal Care" may in fact be scored under "Infection Control."

• Basic Nursing Skills: any act or activity considered a basic skill necessary to perform the job of a CNA.
• Care Impaired: residents who are physically or mentally limited from receiving "standard" care, requiring the CNA to perform more extensively or differently.
• Communication: verbal and nonverbal, written or spoken communication, including anything related to hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting, or smelling.
• Data Collection: data acquisition, handling, and routing.
• Disease Process: stages and theory of disease, and the detection, prevention, or treatment of disease.
• Infection Control: the nature of infections, their causes and prevention, and correct methods for dealing with infections.
• Mental Health: the mental processes of residents, signs and stages of mental states, and the mental well-being of the CNA and co-workers.
• Personal Care: activities performed by the CNA for or to residents that are personal in nature.

Oral Knowledge Examination Option

Candidates who experience reading difficulties or English literacy challenges may request the Oral Knowledge Examination format when registering in TMU.

• The audio exam delivers the same 70 questions electronically: the questions and answer choices are read through headphones or earbuds while the candidate reads along on the computer screen.
• The passing threshold remains identical: 73% or better (at least 52 of 70 correct).
• The audio version carries a $10 surcharge on top of the $35 knowledge fee, for $45 total, and must be requested before you submit your testing fee payment — you cannot switch to audio on test day.

5. The Manual Demonstration Skill Test

Mississippi's practical component is officially called the Manual Demonstration Skill Test. It is a hands-on simulation conducted in a skills lab with a live resident actor, evaluated by an approved RN Test Observer (RNTO) who records exactly what they observe against the published step lists. Your first task is always one of four mandatory tasks, each of which has soap-and-water hand washing embedded at the end. Key Steps: The Steps Printed in Bold

Headmaster does not use the phrase "critical element step" — that is Credentia/NNAAP vocabulary from other states, and repeating it in a Mississippi exam room will confuse you. In the Mississippi Candidate Handbook, the steps that carry automatic-failure weight are simply the key steps, printed in bold font inside each task's step list.

[!IMPORTANT] The Mississippi scoring rule, stated exactly as the handbook states it: "You must correctly perform all of the key steps (in bold font) and 80% of all non-key steps on each task assigned to pass the Skill Test."

Two independent conditions, applied task by task: 80% of the listed steps on that task, and zero missed bold key steps on that task. Fail either condition on any one task and you fail the Skill Test. Your knowledge exam score is scored separately and is not lost.

[!WARNING] All steps must actually be demonstrated. Steps that are only verbalized or simulated will not count. Saying "I would wash my hands here" earns nothing; you must walk to the sink and wash them.

The Self-Correction Protocol

Headmaster examination rules allow candidates to self-correct mistakes during the skill test, and the correction window is wider in Mississippi than candidates expect:

1. If you realize you omitted a step or performed one incorrectly, tell the RN Test Observer that you would like to make a correction.
2. You must then correctly demonstrate the step or steps you believe you performed incorrectly in order to receive credit for the correction.
3. You may repeat or correct any step on any task — including a task you already moved on from — at any point during your allotted 30 minutes, or until you tell the RN Test Observer that you are finished with the Skill Test.
4. The clock and your own declaration are what close the window. Once you say you are finished, or the 30 minutes expire, nothing further can be corrected.

[!TIP] Do not declare yourself finished early. If time remains, mentally re-walk each task and fix anything you doubt. Silence costs nothing; an unspoken doubt costs $100.

Federal OBRA Employer Payment & Reimbursement Mandate
