Exam Format Recap

The MS-102 exam delivers 40-60 scored and unscored (pretest) items in approximately 100 minutes of seat time. The passing score is 700 or greater, reported on Microsoft's standard technical-exam scale of 1 to 1,000. Because that is a scaled score, it is not 70% of the points. You can sit the exam at a Pearson VUE test center or online from your home or office through Pearson OnVUE remote proctoring. Schedule through the Microsoft Learn certification dashboard using a personal Microsoft account (MSA) — not a work or school account — so the credential attaches to you, not your employer, and survives a job change.

Item Types You May See

Microsoft exams use several item formats, and MS-102 can include any of them:

• Single-select multiple choice — one correct answer from four options; the most common format.
• Multi-select ("choose all that apply") — two or more correct answers; partial credit is not awarded, so every selection must be right.
• Drag-and-drop / reorder — sequence steps or match items to categories (for example, ordering a Connect Sync installation or mapping label types to their scope).
• Scenario / case-study items — a short tenant description followed by one or more questions that all reference the same scenario. Read the scenario once carefully; the requirements constrain every answer.
• Active screen / lab-style items — where present, you interact with a simulated Microsoft 365, Entra, Defender, or Purview portal to perform a configuration. These test where and how, not just what.

Not every delivery will include every format, and Microsoft rotates item types without notice. Before exam day, walk through the exam sandbox at aka.ms/examdemo so the UI, the review screen, and the case-study navigation are already familiar.

A Repeatable Question-Handling Strategy

1. Identify the role you are performing

MS-102 certifies the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert — the tenant-level integrating administrator. Unless a scenario explicitly hands you a narrower hat (for example, "you are the Exchange administrator"), answer from the perspective of the administrator who coordinates identity, security, and compliance across the whole tenant. When a question seems to pit a workload-specific fix against a tenant-wide one, the Expert admin usually owns the tenant-wide control and coordinates the specialist — they do not personally configure every mailbox or endpoint.

2. Read the constraint phrases

Microsoft item writers signal the best answer with constraint language. Train yourself to underline these phrases mentally:

• "least privilege" — pick the role with the narrowest permissions that still satisfies the task; prefer a scoped built-in role over Global Admin, and a custom role over a broader built-in when the task is narrow.
• "minimize administrative effort" — prefer a native, first-party feature or policy over a scripted, manual, or multi-step workaround; prefer one policy over many.
• "meet the requirements" / "ensure that…" — every requirement in the scenario must be satisfied; an option that meets three of four requirements is wrong.
• "recommend the best" / "which should you use" — there is one best answer; the others are plausible but inferior.

3. Eliminate, then decide

Cross out options that violate a stated requirement, use a deprecated feature, or describe the wrong tool family. If two options are nearly identical, one is usually a distractor that misplaces a single word ("retention" vs "sensitivity", "Conditional Access" vs "Identity Protection"). After elimination, choose the option that satisfies all requirements with the least privilege and effort.

4. Manage your time

You have roughly 100 minutes for up to 60 items — about 1.7 minutes per item on average. Case-study and active-screen items take longer; single-select MCQs take less. Do not park on one item. Flag it, move on, and return using the review screen. Answer every item before time expires: there is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a blank.

5. Use the review screen

Flagged items are listed on the review screen. Return to them with fresh eyes after completing the rest of the exam. If you change an answer, do so only when you find a concrete reason in the scenario or the option wording — instinct-only changes tend to move toward the distractor.

OnVUE Online Proctoring Prep

If you test online with OnVUE, the proctor must verify you are alone and have no prohibited materials. Prepare the room before check-in:

• Clear the desk — no phones, notes, books, second monitors, or smartwatches.
• Webcam and microphone on — the proctor uses them for continuous monitoring and a 360-degree room scan.
• Photo ID ready — a government-issued ID matching the name on your Microsoft profile.
• Close all other applications — run the OnVUE pre-check and quit browsers, VPN clients, and chat tools.
• Stay alone — no one may enter the room during the exam; pets and family members in the frame can void your attempt.

Run the OnVUE system test a day in advance. A flaky webcam or a blocked microphone is the most common reason online sessions are terminated before the first question appears.
