Almost every serious applicator poisoning in the historical record happened during mixing and loading, not during application. The reason is simple arithmetic: at the tank you are handling undiluted concentrate, often the most acutely toxic form of the product that exists, and you are handling it by hand.

That is why product labels frequently require a chemical-resistant apron, face shield or goggles, and heavier gloves for mixers and loaders than for the person driving the sprayer, and why engineering controls matter more here than anywhere else in the job.


Step 1: Choose the Site Before You Open Anything

The mix and load pad is where a small mistake becomes a groundwater problem. Evaluate:

Step 2: Protect the Water Source

  • Back-siphoning happens when the fill hose is left submerged in the tank mixture and the water pressure drops — the mixture is drawn back down the hose into the well or supply line. The fix is free: keep the end of the fill hose above the liquid level in the tank at all times, maintaining an air gap.
  • Backflow through the supply system. Under Minn. Stat. 18B.07, subd. 5, a person may not fill application equipment directly from a public water supply or from public waters unless the equipment or the supply has a backflow prevention device complying with the Minnesota Plumbing Code (Minn. R. Chapter 4714). Cross connections are prohibited outright.

A third control is procedural and just as important: never leave a filling tank unattended. Overflows happen in the two minutes you stepped away.

A useful practice is to fill from a nurse tank or portable water supply rather than directly from a well, which removes the direct-connection risk entirely.


Step 3: Open, Measure, and Transfer Safely

  • Read the label again at the tank. Confirm the rate, the carrier volume, the mixing order, and the mixer/loader PPE — not the applicator PPE.
  • Position yourself. Open containers and pour at or below waist height and never above eye level, standing so that the wind carries dust or vapor away from your face. Stand upwind.
  • Open bags cleanly. Use a sharp knife and cut away from your body along the top so dust does not puff toward your face. Do not tear paper bags open.
  • Use dedicated measuring equipment. Keep marked measuring cups, graduated cylinders, and scales that are used for nothing else and stay with the pesticide storage. Never use kitchen or household utensils.
  • Measure at ground level so a dropped container falls a short distance and a splash does not reach your face.
  • Triple-rinse or pressure-rinse the container immediately and pour the rinsate straight into the spray tank. Rinsing a dried container later is much less effective and creates a hazardous-waste disposal problem.

  • Mix only what you need. Leftover diluted mixture has no good disposal path; the only lawful outlet is applying it to a labeled site at or below labeled rates.

Engineering Controls: Doing Less Handling in the First Place

Personal protective equipment is the last line of defense; it works only if it is intact, correctly worn, and correctly removed. Engineering controls remove the exposure instead of blocking it.

Closed Mixing and Loading Systems

A closed system moves concentrate from its container into the tank without the handler contacting it. Two forms:

  1. Mechanical systems — a probe, pump, and metering device that draws product from the container through hoses and often rinses the container in place. Many require a specific container coupling.
  2. Water-soluble packaging (WSP) — the product is pre-measured inside a film pouch that dissolves in the tank. The pouch is added unopened. Two rules: never handle WSP with wet or contaminated gloves, because the film will dissolve in your hand, and store the pouches dry.

Some labels require a closed system for the highest-hazard products; when the label requires one, using an open pour is a use inconsistent with the labeling.

Enclosed Cabs

An enclosed cab with functioning filtration protects the applicator during application. Two cautions: the filtration must be maintained and the correct type for the hazard, and PPE that would otherwise be required must be available inside the cab in a sealed container so it can be put on before exiting into a treated area. Do not carry contaminated PPE into a clean cab.

Containment Pads and Rinsate Tanks

A curbed load pad with a sump lets you recover spills and washwater. Collected rinsate should be used as make-up water in the next batch of the same product, or applied to a labeled site at or below the labeled rate. Dedicated rinsate holding tanks make that practical, and Minnesota's bulk storage rules exclude rinsate holding tanks from the "storage container" definition, which simplifies siting them.


Step 4: After the Application

  • Clean the sprayer where the rinsate can be handled — on the containment pad, or in the field where the rinsate can be sprayed onto a labeled site. Never wash a rig near a well, ditch, or storm drain.
  • Follow the label's tank cleanout procedure, especially after auxin herbicides; residue in hoses, screens, and the boom is a leading cause of crop injury on the next job.
  • Wash gloves before removing them, then remove other PPE, then remove gloves last and wash your hands and face.
  • Complete the record. Minnesota requires it within five days, but the details are far easier to reconstruct the same afternoon.
