Why This Matters for the Exam

The Michigan Cosmetology theory exam is built entirely from the PSI National Cosmetology Theory content outline (effective February 11, 2026), and every one of the 100 scored questions is drawn from one of ten weighted domains. Candidates who spend equal time on every topic waste hours on low-yield areas like Hairstyling (2%) while under-preparing for Safety and Infection Control (30%) — the single largest slice of the exam. The fastest path to the passing score of 70 out of 100 is to let the official domain weights set your study calendar, not your personal interest or salon habits.

The Official Domain Weights

Notice that the top two domains, Safety and Infection Control (30%) and Client Consultation (19%), together account for 49 of the 100 scored items — nearly half the exam. Add Chemical Texture Services (12%) and Haircoloring (10%) and the four highest-weighted domains cover 71% of the test. If your study time mirrors that concentration, you are studying like the blueprint, not against it.

Turning Weights Into a Study Schedule

A simple, reliable method is to treat each domain's percentage weight as the percentage of your total prep hours. If you plan a 50-hour study block before your PSI appointment, the math looks like this:

Before you build a calendar, know exactly what you are training for:

• Format: 100 scored multiple-choice questions plus 10 unscored experimental (pretest) questions, delivered in randomized order so you cannot identify which 10 do not count.
• Time limit: 120 minutes (2 hours) for all 110 questions — a little over one minute per question, though most well-prepared candidates finish with time left to review flagged items.
• Passing score: 70 points out of 100 scored items (70%).
• Administrator: PSI Services LLC, under contract to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

Where Candidates Lose Points

Because Safety and Infection Control is both the largest domain and the one most candidates assume they already know from daily salon habits, it is also where careless points get lost. Questions test exact terminology — the difference between cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing — along with specific disinfectant contact times and OSHA/EPA/FDA lines of authority, not just general common sense. Client Consultation questions frequently combine a scenario (a client symptom or product history) with a judgment call, so practicing scenario-based questions matters more than memorizing definitions alone for that domain.
