1.3 Keeping the License: Renewal, Changes, Reinstatement, Reporting & Continuing Education (RS 22:1671, 1673, 1677)

Key Takeaways

  • Louisiana adjuster licenses renew on the last day of the licensee’s birth month; licenses ending in an even digit renew in even years and odd digits in odd years (LDI).
  • The LDI lists the claims adjuster renewal fee at $75 with a $50 penalty for late filing (effective January 2026).
  • A licensee must report a change of address, legal name or application information within 30 days or face a $50 fine per violation (R.S. 22:1671(C)).
  • A lapsed claims adjuster license can be reinstated within 24 months of expiration with proof of continuing education and payment of all fees (R.S. 22:1671(F)).
  • R.S. 22:1673 requires 24 hours of continuing education each two-year cycle, including ethics and at least two hours of legislative updates; the LDI applies the update requirement starting with July 2027 renewals.

How Long a License Lasts (R.S. 22:1671(B))

A claims adjuster license stays in effect unless it is revoked, terminated, suspended, or denied renewal or reinstatement. That holds only if the renewal request is filed, the R.S. 22:821 fee is paid and every other renewal requirement is met by the due date. Every licensed claims adjuster must file for renewal every two years.

The Renewal Calendar (LDI)

LicenseeRenewal date
Individual claims adjusterLast day of the birth month; license numbers ending in an even digit renew in even-numbered years, odd digits in odd-numbered years
Producer and claims adjuster business entitiesMarch 31, in an even or odd year based on the license number

Example: An adjuster born in October holds a license number ending in 7. The license expires October 31 of odd-numbered years, such as 2027 and 2029.

How and What to Pay

  • Renew through the LDI Industry Access portal, where the renewal option opens 90 days before expiration, or through NIPR by credit card.
  • A resident with a CE requirement must be CE-compliant before an NIPR renewal can be filed. During the last 5 days of the month, Industry Access accepts a provisional renewal with newly completed course certificates uploaded.
  • Fees (LDI, effective January 2026): claims adjuster renewal $75, penalty for late filing $50. Public adjusters pay $75 with a $150 late-filing penalty.
  • Every renewal includes the required acknowledgment of the claims adjuster standards of conduct (R.S. 22:1674.1(B)).

Keeping Records Current (R.S. 22:1671(C) and (D))

  • Change of address, legal name or application information: notify the commissioner within 30 days. Missing the deadline carries a $50 fine per violation. The licensee receives notice and may request a hearing under Chapter 12 of Title 22 (R.S. 22:2191 et seq.).
  • Assumed or trade names: notify the commissioner before using any name other than your legal name, on the prescribed form, with a certified copy of the Secretary of State registration. Using a nonapproved trade name carries a fine of up to $250. Continuing to use it 10 or more days after the commissioner orders you to stop adds a fine of up to $5,000.
  • Licensed claims adjusters are subject to Louisiana's unfair trade practices law (R.S. 22:1961 et seq.) and insurance fraud law (R.S. 22:1921 et seq.) under R.S. 22:1671(E).

Lapse, Reinstatement and Waivers

SituationRule
Claims adjuster license lapsesReinstate the same license within 24 months of expiration with proof that all CE was completed through the reinstatement date and payment of all fees due (R.S. 22:1671(F))
Lapsed more than 24 monthsMeet the requirements for a new license
Military service, long-term medical disability or other extenuating circumstanceRequest a waiver of renewal procedures, and of any exam, fine or sanction imposed for noncompliance (R.S. 22:1671(G))
Public adjuster license lapses (comparison)Reinstate within 12 months with a penalty of double the unpaid renewal fee (R.S. 22:1699(D))

The LDI does not require new fingerprints for a producer, adjuster or consultant license reinstated within two years of the lapse.

Reporting of Actions (R.S. 22:1677)

Two self-reporting duties apply to every adjuster, and both run on 30-day clocks:

  1. Administrative actions: report any administrative action taken against the adjuster in any jurisdiction or by another governmental agency within 30 days of the final disposition, with a copy of the order, consent order or other relevant documents.
  2. Criminal prosecutions: within 30 days of a conviction, report any criminal prosecution in any jurisdiction for violating insurance laws or regulations, any felony, or any misdemeanor involving misappropriation of funds. Include the initial complaint, the order resulting from the hearing and other relevant documents.

Continuing Education (R.S. 22:1673)

Acts 2025, No. 29 amended the CE statute. It now requires an adjuster who is not exempt to complete at least 24 hours of approved CE, including ethics, with at least two hours on legislative updates in insurance law. The hours are reported every two years in conjunction with the license renewal cycle.

The LDI's CE requirements table describes the adjuster requirement (claims and public adjusters) as 24 hours, including 3 hours of ethics and 2 hours of legislative updates. It says the legislative-update hours are required effective with renewals of July 2027. Because licenses expire on the last day of the birth month, check your own renewal date against that effective date.

Exam Scenarios

Scenario 1: The overlooked address change

An adjuster moves from Lafayette to Lake Charles on March 1 and updates her license record on May 15. She missed the 30-day deadline in R.S. 22:1671(C) and faces a $50 fine for the violation, with the right to request a hearing.

Scenario 2: Out-of-state discipline

Texas fines a Louisiana nonresident adjuster in a consent order that becomes final June 10. The adjuster must send Louisiana a copy of the order by July 10, within 30 days of final disposition (R.S. 22:1677(A)). An unreported out-of-state action can itself become a denial or revocation ground under R.S. 22:1672.

Scenario 3: The 19-month lapse

An adjuster misses a renewal and returns 19 months later. He can reinstate the same license because he is within 24 months, but he must prove CE compliance through the reinstatement date and pay all fees due, including any late-filing penalty.
