Can You Take the EDAIC Part I Exam?

Candidates may take the EDAIC Part I at any stage of their anaesthesiology training, and a pass has no expiry date. It is the gateway to the EDAIC Part II oral examination.
Additional Requirements
  • •Candidates register through ESAIC and may sit the examination in one of 11 languages, with the English text always provided alongside the chosen language.
  • •The Part I examination is held annually in mid-September simultaneously in centres around the world.
  • •Holders of certain national diplomas (for example the FRCA, the FCAI or the Turkish TSA diploma) can apply for exemption from Part I; check the current ESAIC Diploma Guide for the rules.

EDAIC Part I — European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care

Administered by European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC)

There is no fixed published pass mark: the ESAIC Examinations Committee sets the pass mark for each paper each year, using reference questions, and candidates must pass both Paper A and Paper B. A published analysis of 17,401 candidates reported an overall Part I pass rate of about 69 percent.

For 2026, ESAIC listed a Part I fee of EUR 180 for candidates from countries where the examination is mandatory or nationally recognised (and candidates on those national registers), EUR 290 for ESAIC members or EUR 360 for non-members from European middle-income countries, and EUR 380 for members or EUR 450 for non-members from other countries. Exam Fee
Study time: Most candidates revise over several months using core anaesthesia textbooks, the ESAIC sample questions, the On-Line Assessment (OLA/HOLA) and question banks to cover the full basic-science and clinical syllabus.

Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, pharmacology, and physics and clinical measurement relevant to anaesthesia and intensive care. Sixty MCQ, each with five true/false statements, marked out of 300.

Clinical Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (Paper B)50%

Clinical anaesthesia across surgical specialties, perioperative care, intensive care medicine, pain medicine, resuscitation and emergency medicine. Sixty MCQ, each with five true/false statements, marked out of 300.
