Can You Take the MRCPI GM Part I Exam?

Education
Candidates must hold a medical degree acceptable to the Medical Council of Ireland and may sit Part I from six months after graduating from medical school.
Additional Requirements
  • A candidate may attempt each MRCPI component a maximum of six times; there is no overall time limit to pass Part I.
  • Holders of certain equivalent qualifications may be exempt from Part I and proceed directly to Part II Written.

There is no fixed percentage pass mark. The pass standard is set by the examiners using a criterion-referenced standard-setting process, and the same standard is applied to every candidate in a diet. There is no negative marking and all questions are equally weighted.

The fee to sit MRCPI General Medicine Part I from 1 January 2026 is EUR 730 for both Irish and overseas candidates; payment is by credit or debit card at the end of the online application. Candidates working in Ireland may claim a refund under the HSE Clinical Course and Examination Refund Scheme.
Exam Fee
Study time: RCPI advises allowing three to four months of preparation alongside a busy clinical job, practising single-best-answer questions from reputable question banks and textbooks and using the BST curriculum as a blueprint.

Clinical internal medicine across the specialties75%

At least three-quarters of the paper covers general internal medicine across cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology and hepatology, nephrology, endocrinology, rheumatology, haematology, oncology, infectious diseases, neurology, dermatology, geriatric medicine and acute care, focusing on common and important hospital diseases.

Clinical pharmacology and therapeutics10%

Drug mechanisms, indications, adverse effects, interactions, pharmacokinetics, antidotes and evidence-based prescribing relevant to general medicine.

Basic and applied sciences10%

Physiology, biochemistry, immunology, genetics, microbiology and anatomy as applied to clinical medicine, framed where appropriate around a clinical stem.

Statistics, epidemiology and clinical ethics5%

Elementary biostatistics and evidence-based medicine (sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, study design, measures of effect) and core principles of clinical ethics and consent.
