[!NOTE] Official Reference Material Verification: Testing centers inspect candidate code books. DOPL’s bulletin is explicit that no other versions of the code book are allowed — no commentaries, no illustrated versions, and no handbooks. Idaho’s tested edition moved to the 2023 NEC effective August 1, 2025, so the 2017 or 2020 editions will not match the citations, table numbers, and subsection structure used in the questions.

DOPL’s approved-reference list for the Journeyman, Limited Installer, and Master exams contains only the NEC and the three commercial index/reference books above. The Idaho statutes and rules are still testable — you simply have to know them from memory rather than look them up. (The separate Contractor exam allows the DOPL Contractor’s Business and Law Reference Manual, which must be printed, hole-punched, and placed in a three-ring binder before exam day.)

Marking Up Your Books

DOPL's rule is short and worth quoting: you may highlight your book, tab different sections, and leave notes in your reference material, but loose paper in your reference material will not be allowed. That is a genuinely permissive marking policy compared with many states — build your index, write your formulas in the margins, and tab every table in the "Power Tables" checklist below.

Calculators

Bring a silent, non-programmable, battery- or solar-powered basic four-function or scientific calculator. Devices with QWERTY keyboards, wireless connectivity, stored programs, or text memory are not acceptable at PSI test centers. PSI does not publish an approved-model list for this program, so verify the device rules in the candidate bulletin for the exam you schedule rather than assuming a particular model is allowed.

If You Think a Question Is Wrong

DOPL provides a formal challenge path, and knowing it is worth points of peace of mind:

1. Use the feedback button available on every question during the exam. Feedback must reference an article in the code book and state the answer you believe is correct; feedback that does not meet that standard is not reviewed.
2. If you did not leave feedback during the exam, submit a Comment/Challenge form to DOPL within 15 days of completing the exam.
3. Allow 15 days for a response on a failed exam; if a score change is merited you are notified by email.
4. Critical: if you retake a failed exam on which you submitted an appeal or left feedback, you forfeit the appeal for that attempt. Wait for the ruling before rescheduling.
