The index at the back of the IRC is your roadmap. When faced with a question, identify the keyword in the prompt.

• Example: "What is the minimum size of a water service pipe?" The keywords are "Water service pipe" or "Pipe size." Look up "Water Service" in the index, which will direct you to Chapter 29.
• If your first keyword isn't in the index, think of synonyms or the broader category (e.g., look under "Water Supply" or "Plumbing"). Practice using the index during your study sessions so that looking up terms becomes second nature.

Structuring Your Study Calendar

Preparation is key. Cramming the night before will not work for a code-based exam. You need to build muscle memory for navigating the book. A solid study plan spans four to six weeks.

Week 1: Administration and General Requirements

Focus on Chapter 1 (Scope and Administration) and Chapter 26 (General Plumbing Requirements). Understand the roles of the code official, permitting processes, structural safety (cutting and notching), and piping protection.

Week 2: Fixtures, Water Heaters, and Water Supply

Dive into Chapters 27, 28, and 29. Study fixture clearances, water heater installation (especially pan drains and relief valves), and the sizing of water distribution systems. Practice calculating water supply fixture units (WSFU).

Week 3: Sanitary Drainage, Vents, and Traps

Week 4: Practice Exams and Speed Drills

If a question takes you longer than three minutes to find in the book, mark it, guess, and move on. Return to it if you have time at the end.
