1. Scope: Chapter 25 Is a Quality-Control Chapter

2. Framing, Fastening and Assembly Rules
- Wood supports (2504.1.1) for lath or gypsum panel products, including stripping and furring, must be not less than 2 inches nominal in the least dimension, except that furring strips over solid backing may be 1 inch by 2 inches.
- Single-ply application (2508.3): edges and ends must occur on framing members except where perpendicular to framing, and must be in moderate contact. Floating angles (2508.3.1) permit omitting fasteners at top and bottom plates and at the wall line except on shear-resisting elements or fire-resistance-rated assemblies — that exception is the plan-review point.
- Adhesives (2508.4): gypsum panels adhered to ceiling framing require an approved fastening schedule; expandable foam adhesives must comply with ASTM D6464 and other adhesives with ASTM C557.
- Joint treatment (2508.5): joints and fasteners in fire-resistance-rated assemblies must be treated, with five exceptions including decorative finishes equivalent to joint treatment, single-layer systems where joints occur over wood framing, square-edge or tongue-and-groove board, multilayer systems with offset joints, and assemblies tested without joint treatment.
- Limitations (2508.2): gypsum wallboard or gypsum plaster shall not be used on exterior surfaces exposed directly to the weather, and gypsum wallboard shall not be used where directly exposed to water or continuous high humidity. 4. Lath and Plaster
Interior plaster (2511.1): gypsum or cement plaster must be not less than three coats over metal lath or wire fabric lath and not less than two coats over other permitted bases, except gypsum veneer plaster and one-coat cement plaster specifically designed and approved for one-coat application.
Cement plaster lathing and furring (2510): installation follows ASTM C926 and ASTM C1063; metal lath and attachments must be corrosion resistant (2510.4). Gypsum lath or gypsum wallboard may not be used as a backing for cement plaster (2510.5.2.1) unless a water-resistive barrier plus self-furred metal or wire fabric lath is used on horizontal ceiling/soffit supports or interior walls. Gypsum sheathing is permitted as a backing on walls with a water-resistive barrier per Section 2510.6.
Water-resistive barriers behind stucco (2510.6): in dry (B) climate zones, either two layers of 10-minute Grade D paper (or an equal ASTM E2556 Type I barrier installed as two independent continuous planes) or 60-minute Grade D paper / ASTM E2556 Type II separated from the stucco by a nonabsorbing layer or drainage space. In moist (A) or marine (C) climate zones, add a drainage space or drainage material not less than 3/16 inch deep, or demonstrate 90 percent drainage efficiency per ASTM E2273 or ASTM E2925 Annex A2.
Fire-resistance of plaster (IBC 719): plaster thickness in a rated system is set by the fire test; for equivalency, 1/2 inch of unsanded gypsum plaster equals 3/4 inch of 1:3 gypsum sand plaster or 1 inch of Portland cement sand plaster (719.2).
