Masonry fireplaces and chimneys are prescriptive, dimension-heavy provisions in IBC Chapter 21 (Masonry) that appear in hotels, restaurants, clubhouses, senior housing and mixed-use residential projects. They are also examiner-friendly test material because every requirement is a number that can be checked directly on a section detail.

Three code sections carry the content: Section 2111 Masonry Fireplaces, Section 2112 Masonry Heaters, and Section 2113 Masonry Chimneys. Factory-built fireplaces and chimneys are listed appliances governed by UL 127 and UL 103 and installed per their listings, with fireblocking per IBC 718.2.5.1.

Four exceptions modify the clearance rule (2111.12): listed and labeled UL 127 fireplaces may contact combustibles per their listing; where the fireplace is part of a masonry or concrete wall, combustibles must be 12 inches from the inside surface of the nearest firebox lining; exposed combustible trim and sheathing edges may abut the sidewalls and hearth extension if they stay 12 inches from the firebox lining; and combustible mantels may not be within 6 inches of the opening, with material within 12 inches above the opening limited to 1/8-inch projection per inch of clearance from the opening.

Fireblocking (2111.13): spaces between fireplaces and the floors and ceilings they pass through must be fireblocked with noncombustible material, to a depth of 1 inch between wood joists, beams or headers, placed only on strips of metal or metal lath.

Exterior combustion air (2111.14): required unless the room is mechanically ventilated and controlled so the indoor pressure is neutral or positive. The intake may not be in a garage, attic, basement or crawl space, may not be higher than the firebox, and must be screened with 1/4-inch mesh. The passageway is 6 to 55 square inches, and unlisted ducts need 1-inch clearance to combustibles within 5 feet of the outlet.

Seismic (2111.4, 2111.5): no seismic reinforcement in SDC A or B; in SDC C or D, four No. 4 continuous vertical bars anchored in the foundation for chimneys up to 40 inches wide, plus two more bars for each additional 40 inches, tied with 1/4-inch ties at 18 inches on center; in SDC E or F, full Chapter 21 engineered reinforcement. Anchorage uses two 3/16-inch by 1-inch straps at each floor, ceiling or roof line more than 6 feet above grade, embedded 12 inches into the chimney and bolted to at least four joists with two 1/2-inch bolts.

3. Masonry Chimneys (IBC 2113)

Examiner findings:

  1. Firebox depth. 18 inches is below the 20-inch minimum (2111.7); the Rumford exception requires a documented Rumford design.
  2. Hearth extension. With an opening under 6 square feet, the extension must be 16 inches in front and 8 inches beyond each side (2111.11); 12 inches fails.
  3. Mantel clearance. Combustible mantels may not be placed within 6 inches of the opening (2111.12 Exception 4).
  4. Chimney termination. With a ridge 8 feet away and 2 feet higher, the chimney must extend 2 feet above that ridge — the 3-foot-above-penetration dimension alone is not sufficient (2113.9).
  5. Seismic reinforcement. In SDC D, provide four No. 4 vertical bars with 1/4-inch ties at 18 inches on center and the strap anchorage of 2111.5.
  6. Combustion air. Provide an exterior air intake with 1/4-inch mesh screening and a passageway between 6 and 55 square inches (2111.14).

5. Common Plan Review and Exam Traps

  • Trap 1: Reading 3-2-10 as "3 feet is always enough." Both conditions apply: 3 feet above the penetration and 2 feet above anything within 10 feet.
  • Trap 2: Using the 16/8 hearth extension for a large opening. Openings 6 square feet or larger need 20 inches and 12 inches.
  • Trap 3: Confusing firebox wall thickness. 8 inches with a 2-inch firebrick lining, 10 inches without.
