3.2 Sequence, Cause–Effect & Text Structure
Many ICAS English items are not only “what does the text say?” but “how is this text put together?” Once you can see order, causes, contrasts, and paragraph jobs, you answer faster and with fewer traps. This section covers chronological sequence, process order, cause–effect, common organisational patterns, and the connective words that act like road signs.
Quick frame: Sequence = when / in what order. Cause–effect = why / what resulted. Structure = how the writer organised the whole piece. Paragraph purpose = what this chunk is doing for the reader.
Chronological sequence: first, next, last
Chronological order follows time. Stories, diary extracts, historical recounts, and news reports often use it. Stems look like:
- What happened first / next / last?
- Which event came before X?
- Put these events in the correct order (sometimes implied by choosing the correct sequence statement).
- After ___, what did the character do?
Time signals to underline

Worked example — original mini-narrative
Ava mixed flour and water first. Then she added yeast and a pinch of salt. After the dough had risen for an hour, she shaped two loaves. Finally she baked them until the crusts turned gold.
- First: mixed flour and water.
- Next key step: added yeast and salt.
- After rising: shaped loaves.
- Last: baked until golden.
Trap: an option that places “shaped two loaves” before the dough rose—uses the same words, wrong order.
Sequence in stories with flashbacks
Not every narrative is strictly linear. A paragraph may begin Now and then jump to Last summer. For order questions, reconstruct story time (the order events truly happened), not merely page order (the order sentences appear), unless the question asks what the writer mentioned first.
Read the stem carefully:
- “What did Jordan do first that morning?” → real-world order that day.
- “What does the writer describe first in the paragraph?” → textual order.
Process order (how-to and procedural texts)
Procedural texts (recipes, experiments, instructions, “how a machine works”) use process structure. Missing a step or swapping two steps is a common wrong answer.
Original process mini-text
To reset the classroom tablet, hold the power button for ten seconds until the screen goes black. Release the button, wait five seconds, then press power once to restart. Only after the home screen appears should you open the learning app.
Order matters: hold → black screen → release → wait → press power → home screen → open app. An option that opens the app before the home screen appears is wrong even if every word appears somewhere in the text.
Cause and effect
Cause = reason / why. Effect = result / what happened because of that.

Worked example — original mini-text
Because the bridge was closed for repairs, buses diverted through the market street. Shop owners noticed more customers than usual that week. Therefore several cafés extended their lunch hours.
- Cause of diversion: bridge closed for repairs.
- Effect of diversion: more market-street customers.
- Further effect: cafés extended lunch hours.
Trap: reversing the chain—“the cafés extended hours, so the bridge closed.” Same words, impossible logic relative to the text.
Correlation vs cause
On harder items, the text may show two events that simply happen together. Only choose a causal option if the writer signals or clearly implies a causal link. Do not invent “because” when the text only says “and then.”
Compare–contrast structure
Writers organise ideas by showing similarities (compare) and differences (contrast).

Original mini-text
Both eagles and owls are birds of prey with sharp talons. However, most eagles hunt by day, whereas many owls hunt at night. Eagles often soar high on rising air; owls usually fly more quietly at lower heights.
- Comparison: both birds of prey with talons.
- Contrasts: day vs night hunting; soaring high vs quiet low flight.
A “main difference” question should pick a contrast the text develops—not a detail that is true of only one animal without being framed as a difference.
Problem–solution structure
Common in factual articles and speeches:
- Problem is named (often with negative effects).
- Solution is proposed or described (actions, inventions, policies).
- Sometimes evaluation follows (did it work?).
Original mini-text
Plastic bags littered the school oval after sports carnivals. The student council installed three extra bins near the exit and ran a “pack it out” reminder on the morning announcements. Within a month, cleaners reported far less rubbish on the grass.
- Problem: plastic bag litter after carnivals.
- Solution: extra bins + announcements.
- Result: less rubbish (evaluation).
Paragraph-purpose option might be: “to describe a problem and the steps taken to reduce it.”
Whole-text organisation
Step back from single sentences and map the whole text:

Train yourself to notice these “glue” words under time pressure:

If a question asks why and the sentence begins with Because, the clause after because is often the cause. If it asks what happened next and you see Then, follow that arrow.
Exam strategy checklist
- Circle the stem’s target: order, cause, effect, structure, or paragraph purpose.
- Mark signal words in the relevant sentences.
- Sketch a tiny timeline or chain for multi-step items (Event A → B → C).
- Reject reversed logic (effect presented as cause; last step presented as first).
- For structure items, prefer options that describe organisation (compares two animals) over options that only restate one fact.

Mastering sequence and structure does not replace close reading of detail—it organises that reading so you know where to look and how ideas relate.
Read the passage. "Noah fed the chickens first. Next he collected eggs from the nesting boxes. After breakfast he repaired a broken fence post. Finally he wrote a short note for his grandmother about the repair." What did Noah do immediately after collecting the eggs?
Read the paragraph. "City planners wanted safer crossings near the primary school. Because drivers often sped through the intersection at drop-off time, the council installed a raised zebra crossing and brighter signs. As a result, average speeds fell, and teachers reported fewer close calls." Which statement best describes the structure of the paragraph?
