There is no fixed pass mark. ICAS grades are awarded by percentile within each country, subject and year level: High Distinction (top 1%), Distinction (next 10%), Credit (next 25%), Merit (next 10%) and Participation for all remaining students.

Text comprehensionOne ICAS English strand

Students read literary, factual and visual texts such as stories, poems, articles, advertisements, diagrams and webpages, then locate information, identify the main idea, make inferences and predictions, and interpret meaning.

Writer's craftOne ICAS English strand

Questions focus on the techniques and choices writers make for effect, including literary devices, figurative language, tone, point of view, style, audience and the purpose of features such as tense or font.

SyntaxOne ICAS English strand

The syntax strand covers correct sentence structure, connectives, tense, agreement, pronoun referencing, clause types, modality and the use of punctuation such as commas, apostrophes, colons and parentheses.

VocabularyOne ICAS English strand

Vocabulary questions test word meaning in context, synonyms and antonyms, prefixes and suffixes, idiomatic language and commonly confused words, increasing in sophistication across the year levels.
